How much of an entrepreneur are you?

How much of an entrepreneur are you?

What problem can you solve? What does the word "opportunity" mean to you? Is it a chance to for you to gain something? I bet you never thought that a problem could create an opportunity for you.. but it can. You can even use your own hobby to create an opportunity for yourself but that is a whole article by itself.

The desire to make money is not strong enough to start a business even though it is necessary to make the business survive. Most successful businesses are started with someone's dream. Profitable businesses are all based on good ideas or implementation of old ideas. Bill Gates imagined his software on every one's computer and he accomplished his vision. That doesn't mean that he was the first one to invent software. You can invent your own software program to solve a computer software program.

Take the survey below to see how much of an entrepreneur you are. This survey, developed by the National Federation of Independent Business, is a great way to assess your character. Read each of the qualities and explanations listed. Rate the degree to which you believe you possess that quality by circling a number from 1 to 10. After three months, you can take the survey again, using a different color pen or pencil, and see how you have grown.

Excercise:

1. List six other traits that you think you have. 2. List five more traits that you think you could develop.

If you are lacking some characteristics but have energy and motivation, the other traits can be developed. Entrepreneurship is a discovery process. Each time you make any choice regarding your business, you will quickly get feedback from the market. Competition encourages change. Each time the demand for your product or service goes up or down, it is time to make changes.

One way to start thinking like an entrepreneur is to imagine how you would respond to a challenge or an opportunity, or even to some information about consumers. Where other people see problems, entrepreneurs see opportunities for creating new businesses. Countless businesses start from finding the solution to a problem.

Here are some hypothetical situations. What business would you consider in order to find solutions to these needs? If you find creative ideas and solutions to these, then your entrepreneurial instinct is very good.

See if you can find ways to solve these problems.

  1. Kids with after school activities and working parents
  2. A going-out of business sign placed in a local store
  3. A new retirement home is built near your home
  4. Four new working families with small children just moved into your neighborhood
  5. Your neighborhood friends just bought computers for their children
  6. 100 percent increase in gas prices
  7. You live near a college
  8. You know a lot of families who have birthday parties for their children
  9. A lot of people in your community speak only one language.
  10. Your neighbors don't have time to mow their lawn.

Think of ways that you can work out solutions to different problems or needs. Uncover a new resource or technology or apply existing resources or technologies in new ways.

Sometimes all it takes is recognizing a need and filling that need. "Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart." You have to be a risk taker to succeed as an entrepreneur and you also cannot be a "quitter." Your success depends on you and how willing you are to go the extra mile.
