The beats and the music are incorporated with southern aesthetic and gothic themes. Dirty South music had initial difficulty in creating foundation for their music especially in the 80's when recording companies were very hesitant in accepting them to record labels because of the popularity of the New York Style Hip Hop. Thus, in their desire to be heard, Southern Hip Hop artists started to record their songs and distribute them locally in bars and live performances. These days, dirty south music has established itself as one of the mainstream types of hip hop in the industry. Its following has extended from south-based fans to fans from all over the world who appreciate good hip hop music. For people who like popular rap music, it might be a bit difficult to understand Dirty South music especially since rap artist from this region use heavy Southern slang and drawl in their lyrics. However, with the collaboration of southern rappers with popular mainstream artists like Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, more and more people have grown aware of this distinct type of hip hop music.
