Dirty South Music
When the emergence of hip hop music in New York City drastically changed the music industry permanently during the 80's, it is already inevitable that artists from other regions would stand up and start their own type of musical genre. Dirty South or Southern hip hop music is the rap and hip hop music that started from the clubs of the southern states of America. While New York's hip hop focused more on the ghetto style, Southern rap has more clubbing and party vibe incorporated to it. This is not to say that dirty south rap is full of auto-tuned rap, though. Suffice to say, despite similarities, New York hip hop and Dirty South rap have distinct hip hop sounds in them that only true hip hop fans would be able to distinguish.
Dirty South music started in southern states like New Orleans, Virginia Beach, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Houston, Shreveport, Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, Memphis, Birmingham, Mobile, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Little Rock, San Antonio, Dallas, and Baton Rouge. In listening to dirty south mixtapes, you will immediately observe the evident southern accent of rappers from the area. The beats and the music are incorporated with southern aesthetic and gothic themes. Dirty South music had initial difficulty in creating foundation for their music especially in the 80's when recording companies were very hesitant in accepting them to record labels because of the popularity of the New York Style Hip Hop. Thus, in their desire to be heard, Southern Hip Hop artists started to record their songs and distribute them locally in bars and live performances. This marked the emergence of the dirty south mixtapes that would later be considered as the third most popular and most downloaded mixtape genre in the United States.
These days, dirty south music has established itself as one of the mainstream types of hip hop in the industry. Its following has extended from south-based fans to fans from all over the world who appreciate good hip hop music. Dirty South mixtapes have also been quite popular on the internet—over a million online websites dedicated solely to dirty south mixtapes and southern hip hop artists. These websites offer free downloads of various newly released mixtapes from dirty south rappers and artists, both popular and new.
One of the most popular dirty south artists right now are Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, Sean Paul, and T-Bo. On the other hand, some of the well-known DJs and MJs that produce and arrange these mixtapes are DJ Drama, DJ Spinatik, DJ Kaze, DJ Expo, and DJ Fletch. These people have established themselves as very important characters in promoting southern hip hop music all over the world.
For people who like popular rap music, it might be a bit difficult to understand Dirty South music especially since rap artist from this region use heavy Southern slang and drawl in their lyrics. However, with the collaboration of southern rappers with popular mainstream artists like Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, more and more people have grown aware of this distinct type of hip hop music.
