Why Do People Become Truck Drivers?

The open road is waiting for their big wheels every day…

Trucks and lorries are a little terrifying when you are driving alongside one on the motorway or trying to pass one coming the other way on a busy city street. Often their huge wheels dwarf your vehicle and their drivers appear to be lost in the depths of a darkened cab which can be really rather alarming. When you stare up at their roaring engines and watch them narrowly miss several other cars by millimetres, the last thing you might be thinking about is actually driving one.

Despite this, there are thousands of lorry drivers in the UK trundling up and down the motorways day after day delivering our goods. So why is it that people decide to become lorry drivers?

Money

A very simple reason why some people go through the incredibly rigorous tests, pay for their licenses and build up their miles in order to get a full time job driving, is that the money can be really quite good. Depending on the size of the vehicle, the number of miles and hours they drive and day and how much experience they have, a truck driver can earn anywhere from 30 thousand, up to 65 thousand pounds per year. The highest pay is normally reserved for those who have to drive very long distances and are required to stay away from home for extended periods of time.

Travel

Having said this, travel is one reason why some people want to be truck drivers. Spending your week visiting cities around the country or even around Europe can be exactly the right sort of job for some people. If they have a family this may also be a great opportunity for them to get away for a few days from time to time.

Solitude

For some it is the solitude which they enjoy about the job. While they can occasionally have passengers along for long journeys, it is normally solo job. Being able to get away from the world is important for some people as they can look after themselves, eat what they want and listen to music all day. The only contact they need have with humans is at petrol stations and through logistics management software and supply chain software that they probably have linked into their cab.

Power

As a keen driver, a truck can be the ultimate power trip, as its size and sheer grunt can make the driver feel like they are king of the road. But…with great power, comes great responsibility.
