Help Your Child Have A Successful Day In Nursery School

Start Your Child's First School Experience Successfully

by Shannon DeMarco

Starting school at any age can be a nerve racking experience, not only for the student but for a parent or guardian. There are a few ways to start your child's first experience on a good note.

As a teaching asistant in a nursery school and kindergarten environment for the past 6 years, I have taken note to many positive and negative ways that children are introduced to a school environment.

One of the most important things is to keep a perspective on the school environment that your three to four year old is entering. It is just that, a three to four year old class. It is not high school or college. There is not a demand for educational proformance. It is best to remember that a child's work is a child's play. So it is best to remember that your nursery school aged child does need to be do academic crunching.

One thing that has amazed me is how parents seem to be overly concerned with the academic progress of their little one. Children can and will amaze you with their knowledge. At the nursery school age they are like sponges. They are learning even when we least expect it. So parents, relax!

Getting children to school on time is another interesting observation. Most parents have established an order to their day. This is a very important part of a child's school experiene. If a child has been rushed or prodded into getting to school on time they can experience a very stressful day. If you are experiencing difficulty in being on time, you might want to take a step back and keep your child home that day. Remember they are not in college. Their bodies respond to stress just like ours only they are much smaller and lack the life experience to to reason through the moment.

Another part of a good school experience is to make sure your child has had the opprotunity to eat either a breakfeast or a lunch before they are sent to their class. This of course is in coordination with the hours that you have signed them up for. I have noticed the difference it makes in a child's behavior if they have had a good meal before going to school. This would definitely include some sort of protien. This makes me think of some of the snacks that kids are sent with. It isn't so bad to send your child with what you know your child will eat. However, I must say that when a child is sent with a fruit snack and mini juice box, it doesn't help their moods or their belly, If you need to send them with a fruit snack, send something else to balance that out such as a pretzel or cracker snack. The mini juice boxes are not so bad, it's the giant ones that pose a fluid control problem. Send a mini water bottle once in a while, they need it in the warm months and when the inside air is dry in the winter.

Dress your child appropriately. They are small, they make mistakes. In a nursery school there are spills and art mishaps. It is not realistic to dress your child for a fashion show. That is stress on them. While they are learning to pay attention to what they are doing, they are young, they learn from their mistakes and in nursery school it will happen. Their clothes should compfortable. They need to be able to move through the class with ease. This includes footwear. So many many girls come to their class with their pretty shoes, but they are not practicle for the playground or the gym. It is also a safety concern in the classroom, slips can easily happen. It is a good idea to lable everything that they come with. This makes pack-up a non stressful situation for your child.

Being on time to pick up your child is definitely an important way to eliminate any stress that your child may develope as a result of inconsistency. You child is counting on you to build a strong level of trust. It is important that they know when the teacher opens to door for parents to take their children home, that you will be there with a smile!
