What Do You Need To Start Scuba Diving?

An ocean is a start…

by Sam Qam

Scuba diving is a sport you may have tried on holiday, you may have seen on television or you may be thinking about as a change in career. There are certainly countless applications of scuba diving both for professional and recreational exploits and routes to making it a big part of your life are fairly simple.

So what exactly do you need or need to do in order to become a fully-fledged scuba diver?

Training

First things first, you need to learn how to scuba dive. Short scuba excursions on holiday will probably just show you the basics and will not provide you with enough training to allow you to go off diving on your own. What you need to do is to look for somewhere that can provide you with proper accredited scuba training. PADI for example is one of the most recognised training and accreditation labels in the world and their instructors can be found in most major diving locations.

Starting at the beginner level with practical and paper exams, you will work your way up through the levels of diving proficiency until you have a license that will allow you to dive really deep, go explore big wrecks and when you reach the top levels you can teach diving and work as a professional.

Partner

One of the most important things when diving is, when possible; to always have a partner to dive with you. This gives you someone to enjoy the experience with of course but also is good for safety. If for example you air tank malfunctions and you are quite deep, your partner will have a spare regulator or can share their own so that you can get to the surface safely.

Equipment

You will probably want to get you own gear at some point too. You will need a wet suit of course so that you can go deeper as it is colder the deeper you go, flippers, a snorkel and a mask, a supply of air tanks or just one and somewhere to fill it up, a weights belt that help you go down, a depth gauge so you know how deep you are, a regulator that allows you to breathe and a BCD which fills with air or releases air to adjust your depth and buoyancy levels. There is a lot more equipment you can get but these are the basics. You may also want to consider a dive torch and a cheap underwater digital camera.

Once you have all this stuff you can go and dive almost anywhere you want. So what are you waiting for?
