by Nathalie Fiset M.D.

Walking is a great way to lose weight but is often overlooked by many people. It seams like in people’s mind losing weight through exercising require an expensive home gym, a qualified trainer or a great deal of pain. In that line of thought, taking a nice walk could not possibly be good for your health nor help you lose weight. The fact is walking is a great way to get in shape or maintain a healthy weight. To walk regularly can bring on many benefits like helping stay in shape and slow down osteoporosis. It can also help a person lose weight if it is combined with healthy eating. Before starting a walking program, there are a couple of elements that need to be addressed. First and foremost, a person needs to consult with her physician before starting any exercise program. Next, choosing the right pair of walking shoes and socks is of outmost importance. A walking program will be best followed if a person is motivated and enjoys the outdoor. One way to help keep the motivation is to have a walking body such as a friend, a neighbour or even a dog. There are many walk groups nationwide that are usually free. When the weather is not comfortable enough to go outside, there are two simple alternatives: you can go into a mall and enjoy your brisk walk or a treadmill will also be a good alternative. While doing your daily walk, involving your arms in the effort will keep your upper body in shape and will help you burn more calories, an essential element of a good weight loss program. A pedometer is a good way of tracking your progress but is not essential in a walking program. Aiming at getting at least 10 000 steps a day is a good goal. Once you feel your energy is up and you need more challenges, incorporating going up stairs in your daily walk will add up extra calories burning and will give you fat burning cardio exercises. Changing the route you are using everyday will add more diversity and will keep your interest up for the exercise. When taking on such an activity as walking, security should be of concern. Avoiding such risks as not walking alone, in remote areas or in the dark will ensure that the activity is a pleasant and secure one. If you lack the desired motivation to start a walking program or any exercise program for that matter, self-hypnosis can help you reprogram your mind to set it so that you actually are looking forward to your next stroll. By feeling the desire to pursue a serious exercise program, a person will be able to lose weight and stay healthy.
