Try to Avoid These Three SEO Blunders

by Terrence Jolliff

No matter what type of site you have or what type of internet business, you need visitors from your target audience. To accomplish this, your site must rank high when it comes to the search engines. When you have SEO done on your website, you start to get free organic traffic that's not only highly targeted but also converts well. On the other hand, if you're new to the SEO game, it's important that you learn a few blunders to stay away so that you don't harm your chances for success.

Traffic happens to be one of the most important elements of your online business, without which, it's impossible to see any positive results. And the best way to get such traffic is to optimize your website for the search engines. Unfortunately, instead of working on legitimate tactics to appeal to search engines, some Internet marketers aim at fooling them. This is the reason many websites get banned by Google and other major search engines. But besides that, some webmasters get into unethical practices unknowingly. In each case a lack of knowledge can be ascribed as the cause of such bad decisions. The best way to work with proper SEO is to know where you're going wrong. Let's look at some of the SEO mistakes you should be mindful of during your optimization efforts.

The main mistake beginning webmasters make is attempting SEO with keywords that aren't narrowed down. Yes, keywords happen to be an important element of SEO, but if you go on and stuff a high number of keywords in your content, then it will only get you into trouble with the search engines as they will penalize your website for spamming. You'll lose your ranking due to the over abundance of the keywords on your site, which means you'll lose the traffic too. It's also not appealing to your visitors because they only like sites that make sense and are helpful.

Images do enhance the look of your site, but just like too many cooks spoil the food, having too many images is not good. You could actually lower your search engine rankings by having too many images and not enough room for search engine friendly content. Plain text on your pages might look boring, but it has a far greater effect on your results than text showing on images. Any text you have showing within images can't be read by the search engines, which means they can't use those words for SEO purposes. If you do use graphics, be sure to put your chosen keywords within the ALT attribute for each image. This way search engines would be able to read this attribute in the image, which will ultimately help your ranking. Choosing the wrong keywords is another mistake that webmasters make. If you don't research your keywords well enough and don't have a strong keyword list, it spoils your optimization efforts. How can you convert visitors who don‘t want what you have? Your focus should be on keywords that are popular among searchers. But again, if you don't research, then you'll end up with keywords nobody is looking for. Once you have found some high volume keywords you can start planning your site structure and themes. Keyword research isn't hard but can be time-consuming, however; it is necessary.

These need to be looked at heavily so that you don't commit any SEO techniques that could get you a penalty with the search engines. The search engines are always changing their criteria so make sure you're always updated so that you avoid penalties. For example, Google constantly changes its guidelines so you must abide by those changes or you aren't going to rank very high. In conclusion, there are many different elements which go into making your SEO successful. It might be tempting to fall for the lure of 'blackhat' techniques, that promise fast results for search engine rankings, but these are never long term solutions. Work with the more reliable Whitehat methods that can still offer the same results, but will last for the long term and continue bringing in targeted traffic for years to come.
