Home Styling Tips: How To Arrange Framed Photos On The Wall

by Graham Brightwell

A large gallery display of photos is a uniquely attractive way to give any space warmth. But not being able to put together a group of photos will only create a mess instead of something to be proud about. There are many styles you can use in arranging photos on the wall. You can make them the focal point of a room or a corner in your house. You would want to choose colours of frames that stand out but don't take away from the colours of the space. As a general rule of thumb, frames should be at eye level, or around five feet or a tad more, from the floor. If you have a high ceiling, you can hang them a bit higher. To make a wall of photos, place your favourite pictures in frames of various shapes and sizes. Hang them on your wall in a mosiac pattern. For a more dramatic effect, print the pictures in black and white and use light- or dark-coloured frames. It is best to use frames that reflect the style of the space. Here are two basic ways on how to make a photo wall. Included are some home styling tips and guidelines: 1. Use a piece of paper exactly the size of the space you intend to use. Lay the paper on the floor and arrange your frames onto it and trace them using a pencil. Some of the good choices include diagonal and oval shapes. When you get the style you like, tape the paper up to the wall and mark out where the nails should go. You can take a picture of the final look you like. Make sure the final shape works best for the space you're working on. It is best to choose timeless pictures, so you won't have to keep changing them. You can place the largest frame in the center. Make sure there's two- to three-inch space between the frames. It's best that your frames are arranged tightly. A more loose grouping could work for a more casual wall display. 2. On a piece of paper, trace each frame with a pencil on. Cut each frame and layout them on the floor. Move them around until you get the desired style and shape. Tape each paper on the wall and hammer the nails directly through it. If you use coloured prints, mix dark and light shots. Make sure all eyes are facing the center to make a sense of balance. You can also hang frames printed words, letters, or quotes, and other wall decor for a unique feel. Make sure the nails and the hooks end up in the right place. To know where the hooks should go, hold a frame flat against your wall. With a pencil, mark the top center point of the frame. Turn the frame over and then measure from the top where the hook or wire is on. Measure the same distance from your pencil mark on your wall and out an X mark.
