2005-06 Upper Deck SPx Hockey Review

by Chris Coomber

The long and cold Canadian winters of our youth meant one thing….hockey. Constants in most of our lives were 6 am practices, playing on the pond and watching our NHL heroes skate on TV. During this special time, we were introduced to our hockey card hobbies. Whether it was Howe, Orr, Gretzky or Sakic….O Pee Chee, Upper Deck, Score or Parkhurst everyone remembers the sets and players where they developed their passion for collecting hockey cards. The rebirth of the NHL in 2005/2006 also brings about a renaissance in hockey card collecting. With the one-two punch of Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin and an army of sets featuring cards we couldn’t even dream of as kids, this year is the most exciting year for collectors in over a decade….if not ever. This series of articles will breakdown many of 05/06’s most talked about hockey card sets. The ninth edition of Upper Deck SPx hockey marks the return of brand after a year off due to the National Hockey League Lockout. Collectors will be excited to find out that 2005/2006 Upper Deck SPx is very similar to the last few years of SPx hockey, meaning they can find rookie photo jerseys and autographed rookie jerseys. What separates this year from other recent SPx sets is the inclusion of both Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. At the time of writing Crosby’s autographed rookie jersey books for $1250, while Ovechkin’s is $850. Jeff Carters autographed rookie card is also short printed and books for $200. These three cards are limited to 499 cards. Other autographed rookies are serial-numbered to 1499 copies.Rookie cards that feature a photo-jersey piece but no autograph are numbered to 1999 copies while basic rookie cards (no photo jersey or autograph) are limited to 999 copies. Two rookie jersey cards can be found per box on average. After the signed rookie cards, collectors can look for signed jersey cards of legendary NHL players. These cards are not serial-numbered, but they are believed to be limited to fewer than 200 copies each. Short Prints of this subset are limited to 75 copies. This subset also includes two Gretzky jersey autograph cards.Spectrum parallels of the entire regular set, numbered to 25 are also included.Basic Info: 90 card base set, plus rookies (#’d to 999), Rookie Jersey’s (1:18) and Autographed Rookie Jerseys Level 1 and 2 (1:18), 18 packs per boxParallels: 90 Spectrum (#’d to 25), Spectrum Rookies (#’d to 25), Spectrum Rookie Jerseys (#’d to 25), Spectrum Autographed Rookie Jerseys (#’d to 25), Spectrum Autographed Flashback Fabrics (1/1)Inserts: SPxcitement Rookies (#’d to 999) Superstars (#’d to 499), Legends(#’d to 499), Spxcitement Rookies Gold (#’d to 99), Superstars Gold (#’d to 99), Legends Gold (#’d to 99)Memorabilia and Autographs:Winning Materials (regular and gold and spectrum)Winning Combos (regular and gold and spectrum)Autographd Winning Materials (#’d to 50), Autographed Winning Combos (#’d to 25), Autographed Flashback Fabrics (1:252), Spxcitement Rookies, Superstars and Legends Spectrum Auto (#’d to 5)
