There's Nothing Like A Holiday Feast To Stimulate Thanksgiving Spending

by Gail Leino

One of the most wonderful holidays of the year in America is Thanksgiving. Based on statistics, it is the one day where the most food is consumed in the United States. The two holidays that closely follow in this tradition are Super Bowl Sunday and Christmas.

Turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce will tip the charts as the most popular items that Americans buy during this time of the year. Charities and churches stockpile their supplies of turkeys months before, just so that they can distribute holiday dinners to the homeless, the poor, and other people in need of a comforting meal for that special day. Work places all over the country offer free turkeys to their employees as a bonus for their appreciated hard work. And many places have fresh turkeys, whose orders had been taken long before, by people who wish to have an organic, fresh, non-frozen bird of the proper size for their family for Thanksgiving.

Even with a recession looming, people will try and find a way to put a turkey on the table for their very special yearly family gathering. Thanksgiving dinner symbolizes the friendship of a new type of people in a whole new world, and the unity that is America. But for families, it is a time of giving thanks for what they each have. It is a time of reflection, getting together, and seeing family members and friends that they have not seen perhaps for years.

And so the table is set. The centerpiece must be alluring, the place settings inviting, and the smells of the kitchen tempting. Families gather with pies and desserts in anticipation of a wonderful meal ahead. They are thankful for their families and friends, and they give thanks to God for their meal over which the hostess spared no expense. Those who are still working are thankful that they have jobs, and those who still live in their homes are thankful that they are not amongst the thousands who have lost theirs. The best thing to be thankful for, though, is that the families are joined together again for this glorious feast.
