The Real Difference Between Alcohol Drinking And Alcoholism

by Ericka Lopez

Alcohol drinking for many individuals is a great way to loosen up after long day of stressful work. Many of those who engage in recreational drinking often do so because of the relaxing and euphoric effects alcohol gives to the body. Effects vary according to the dosage or alcohol content present in a drink and the blood alcohol concentration in the body. For an individual to experience euphoria and a relaxed well-being, a blood alcohol concentration must be within 0.03-.0.12%.

Concentrations higher than earlier mentioned would develop harmful effects to the body. To enumerate, a percentage of 0.09-0.25 can make sedate a person, loss body balance, impaired memory and comprehension and also blurred vision. A blood alcohol content percentage of 0.18-0.30 could lead to confusion and impaired senses coupled with vomiting and dizziness. As the blood alcohol content goes up, the ultimate result is coma and death.

Considering the dangerous effects of too much alcohol drinking, why are there so many people addicted to liquor? Alcoholics did not intend to end up being one and the routine of regular drinking came one day at a time. Binge drinking often precedes heavy drinking. Parties and social events are never complete without alcohol servings. There are always reasons unnumbered by individuals who choose to consume alcohol everyday. The potential for alcohol addiction doesn't happen in one occasion. Regular heavy drinking leads to alcohol dependence and when this happens, the possibility of quitting becomes impossible to consider. Alcohol withdrawals are very difficult to go through specially to long term alcohol abusers.

Alcohol addiction is developed in stages. The longer the habit of regular and heavy drinking, the more difficult it is to overcome. Several studies have shown that kids who have 1 or 2 parents, who are alcoholics, have higher tendencies to also develop the addiction. Action speaks louder than words, so parent's actions are always emulated by children. Some of those addicted to alcohol have difficulty in stopping because a sudden halt of alcohol drinking brings painful effects. The treatment for such problem is similar to that of drug addict.

Those who have ever been addicted to any substance would, only if it can be avoided, try to skip feeling the withdrawal effects. But this is not so. Undergoing proper treatment can somehow reduce the withdrawal effects however, and as long as there's a support group of family who would help an alcoholic, the future remains bright for him and those he love.
