Emergency Communications - Methods of Communicating Without Electricity
In the event of an emergency, it is common for electrical power to go out. If this happens, many modern methods of communication may be ineffective. Therefore, it is important to be prepared with emergency communications methods. This includes basic land line phones, battery operated or solar powered cell phone chargers, bullhorns, megaphones, whistles and walkie-talkies. These items can help to assist with rescue operations and even save lives in the event of an emergency or disaster within your community.
First, many land line phones are cordless and require electricity to operate. Although you may feel comfortable relying on a cell phone in an emergency, the battery will eventually go dead rendering it useless. Therefore, consider purchasing a land line phone that does not require electricity as a method of emergency communications. Many older-style phones that have a rotary dial or push buttons do not need power to operate. You can also visit your local appliance store or even a dollar store to find a basic phone that does not require electricity to operate. In addition, consider purchasing a battery operated or solar powered cell phone charger. This will allow you to continue using your cell phone even after the power goes out. Many of these chargers also include a radio and flashlight. A radio can be extremely helpful for receiving emergency messages and instructions from local authorities.
Next, consider investing in a bull horn or megaphone. Although these may not seem like necessary items, they can be helpful for communicating across long distances, distributing messages to large crowds or talking over loud noises during an emergency situation. A whistle is another item that can be used for emergency communications. An individual in distress can use a whistle to draw attention to his or herself. Some whistles even transmit sound up to one mile, which can be extremely helpful in a rescue operation. Another option to consider is a set of walkie-talkies. These battery operated tools can be helpful for communication among friends and family members during an emergency when modern technology such as cell phones are unavailable. Some are even available with multiple channels or privacy codes.
Finally, make sure you have a plan for emergency communications within your family in the event of a disaster in your community. Although some of these items might be unnecessary, most families would prefer to be prepared rather than caught off guard in an emergency.
