How to Build an Email Newsletter that is Successful in the Long Term

by Marcos Mihalios

Before you can truly work to make your newsletter successful, you need to make sure its foundation is sound. Not every newsletter that is published becomes wildly successful but since you already know that there are way more lesser quality newsletters out there than there are top quality newsletters. The competition is stiff because everybody wants a piece of that success pie, so it is not going to be easy to grow your newsletter and sustain long lasting success. It will take a great amount of focus and work on your part to do so. However, there are a few key factors that will definitely smooth your road ahead, and help you get your newsletter forging here. We discuss some of these factors below'

Getting feedback because the reader feels it is needed is one thing; getting feedback because you've invited readers to send it in is something else. Asking your readers for feedback can help you improve your newsletter quite a lot; this is, after all, really important information that you are asking your readers to give you. Ensure you're not making your readers feel uncomfortable when asking for feedback. Keep the request friendly and ensure that your readers understand that the feedback they send in can help you offer better results for your newsletter to them.

Survey your readers at least once every six months so that you can learn about them and whether or not they find your newsletter valuable. Ask a variety of questions that will touch on a variety of newsletter, which can help you make sure that they have the best experience over the long term with your newsletter.

Doing these bi-yearly surveys is not really that difficult; it takes you some time to design the survey and get it out there, but eventually the response that you get from it will be worth it. Just make sure that you aren't creating super long surveys because it is important to respect your readers' time.

Inside the "from line", you need to put something compelling, a phrase or sentence that motivates them to read (not delete!) the email you have sent them. There should be a general consensus or similarity between the subject line, the theme of the newsletter and what is in the "from line" in the e-mail. Believe it or not, your subscribers will react to your e-mail based upon this line, so make sure that it is properly done to get the best result.

Think creatively when you want to get as much as possible from your newsletters and the people who read them. Come up with a new approach and offer your readers things that they aren't going to be able to get from other people. Bring out the real creativity in you so that you know exactly in which direction you're headed, and what all steps you should be taking to improve your chances of greater success in the future.
