Why Choose A Fibre Glass Flagpole?

by Richard Johnson

There are many different materials used in the manufacture of flag poles, from timber and aluminium to fibre glass. I would always choose a glass fibre flagpole over other materials for some very simple reasons:

Price

Price can be a deciding factor when choosing to buy flagpoles and Glass fibre offers a much cheaper alternative to aluminium and timber. An aluminium flagpole can cost over twice as much as a glass fibre one and timber flagpoles can cost over five times as much. So if you do have a budget and you still need an excellent quality flagpole then glass fibre is the way to go.

Appearance

The appearance and the aesthetics of something are always subjective and everyone will always have their own opinion. In my opinion there is no real difference in the look of a glass fibre flagpole compared with an aluminium one, they can be both smooth and shiny. Timber flagpoles will obviously look different as the wood grain will show through, but you do get timber flagpoles that are painted white, when this is the case I feel there is no major difference in the appearance. Another advantage that glass fibre has over timber is that it can have an internal halyard, I feel that this offers a more elegant and cleaner profile (whilst also helping with noise reduction and security).

Weight

Fibre glass is a light weight material. Flagpoles made from aluminium generally weigh thirty to forty percent more than glass fibre poles and timber flagpoles can weigh as much as four or five hundred percent more. If you require a light weight flagpole then glass fibre is definitely the material of choice.

Strength & Longevity

Fibre glass is extremely strong and has excellent longevity and is not susceptible to rot. With timber flagpoles when the timber gets wet and the damp gets through the protective seal it then becomes susceptible to rot and the longevity of the flagpoles becomes reduced.

These four simple reasons are why I would always choose a glass fibre over any other material when choosing a flagpole. I'm always open to expanding my knowledge and looking at new and exciting materials used in the flagpole manufacturing industry, so if you are experimenting with new and different materials in the production of flagpoles and have some relevant information you wish to share please contact me and let me know your findings.
