Finding a Successful Cognitive Therapist

There are many therapists out there but some do not have successful curriculum

by Larry Lloyd

The issue with cognitive therapy is the Therapy part. When a person requires cognitive therapy, how can you be sure that the therapist and the curriculum he/she is using is able to change faulty thinking and self-defeating conduct? There are a myriad of therapists out there each with personal interpretations and curriculum. Few if any, are evidence based with sufficient confirmation that what they use is proper and useful.

Practically every counseling program could claim that it's cognitive therapy, though few, if any, could ascertain that it is successful. In a sense cognitive therapy is a misnomer. The meaning of the word "therapy" is the treatment of illness or disability. Using cognitive therapy in mental illness is almost completely unproductive since you cant utilize cognitive restructuring training on someone who isn't cognitive. This is also true for kids. Cognitive therapy is ineffective on children for an identical reason: they aren't yet cognitive.

The trouble with using therapists to assist in cognitive therapy courses is that most therapists have emotional illnesses themselves and are dwelling in self-deception. That is, they do not understand that they are sick and thus they give their illness (untruths) to their clients. A plethora of individuals go to psycho therapists sessions for many years at a great expense, but they do not heal, in fact, a lot grow worse. Nevertheless, capable cognitive life skills counselors who have good fact based curriculum can assist individuals in creating lasting changes in a matter of hours as opposed to days, months and years. This isn't to say that every therapist is ineffective. The best counselors/therapists have a positive way of being. Individuals make changes because of truth, not counseling techniques. The truth resonates at a frequency that has the power to pierce the veil of self-imposed deceptions and help people remove years of bad programing. Think cognitive restructuring life skills VS a clinical style of cognitive therapy. Look for evidence based cognitive restructuring courses that will give proof that their technique is successful. Look for writers and groups that have had tons of experience in holding and assisting groups. No book learning can replace actual hands-on experience.
