Under 21 car rental and other reasons to visit sunny South Africa

Feel like taking a holiday in Africa? Here is what you can look forward to.

There exist some countries where under 21 car rental is a reality, where individuals as young as 18 can go on road trips without pesky parental supervision. Sounds like a fairytale, doesn’t it? O contraire mon ami, this place – we call her Africa. A continent of exquisite beauty, her renowned natural treasures are just waiting to be explored.

At the foot of this majestic continent one finds the country of South Africa. Previously imbued in controversy due to the atrocities of Apartheid, this fledgling democracy is one of the most inspiring places to be right now. Originally simply intended to be an outpost for the East Indian Company in the heady days of the spice trade, South Africa now boasts a booming economy, a greatly improved infrastructure and an exceptionally eclectic Rainbow Nation.

Those who enjoy embracing the open road are in for a special treat. Whether you are looking to rent a campervan and traverse the country all the way from Cape Town to the Kruger National Park, or simply want to conquer a few sand dunes with your 4x4 hire, South Africa is bound to have something for you. Here are some of the other things you can look forward to:

Affordability: Because South Africa is a developing county, visitors from abroad can capitalize on a favourable exchange rate, making sunny South Africa an affordable tourist destination. It doesn’t matter whether you arrive with Pounds, Euro’s or Dollars in your pocket, you are simply guaranteed a very affordable vacation. South Africa boasts a very sophisticated financial sector, which means Visa and Mastercard facilities, as well as banks and ATM’s, are readily available.

Incredible scenery: No matter which way you turn in sunny SA, there is always a beautiful view to admire (well maybe not in Johannesburg, but that’s another story all together). Drive into the Karoo and you’ll stand amazed by the tranquillity of the wide open vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see; head towards the Garden Route and you will be instantaneously transported to the most verdant of indigenous forests. Add to this a rugged, untamed coastline, fields of wildflowers and incredible mountain ranges and you get one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world.

Fantastic weather climate: South Africa’s temperate climate is world-renowned. Blue skies and sunny, warm days make for perfect beach weather basically all year round. SA’s summer temperatures average between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius, placing the country among the top ten most favourable climates in the world. No wonder the poor Northern Hemisphere dwellers come here in droves to escape their brutal winters. (Interesting note: the coastal town of Mosselbaai has the largest number of recorded sunshine days next to Hawaii! How’s that for an idyllic honeymoon destination?)

Culinary delights: Thanks to its fertile soil and crafty winemakers, South Africa boasts an incredibly rich viticulture that is lauded as one of the world’s great wine producing regions – competing with the likes of Australia, America’s Napa Valley, and even France. A visit to the Western Cape wouldn’t be complete without at least one extensive wine tour. As far as cuisine goes, you couldn’t ask for a more diverse selection. Aside from being on the ball where global cuisine is concerned, SA also offers much in the vein of traditional foods. Whether you choose to have a ‘braai’ (barbeque) in an open-air boma in the bush, or prefer to sample some traditional Xhosa or Zulu delicacies, you won’t be disappointed.

Of course we also have Table Mountain, the Big Five, the Cape Floral Kingdom, the Drakensberg Mountain Range, the Cradle of Mankind, superbly preserved rock art and Nelson Mandela. No need to get jealous now, we welcome visitors with open arms. Simply book your plane ticket, secure your under 21 car rental online and you’re on your way. See you next summer then?
