The Real Value Of A Detailed Family Genealogy Tree - Priceless
All jokes aside, genealogy finds its roots deep inside us. After all, we have a natural and inbuilt quest for understanding, to find a meaning for who we are and why we are here. It's natural that we should want to know everything that we can about our ancestors. If you are not aware of any efforts from any other member of your family to create a family tree, why not go about it yourself? This can be such a fulfilling journey and will help you to really get to know existing family members and create a much stronger bond among you. By creating a family genealogy tree you will reveal a lot about the history and cohesion of the family unit, but you will also paint a reasonable picture of your capability as a researcher too.
Before we relied on computers, the creation of a family tree owed a lot to the ability and creative talent of the researcher involved. Back then, many would create a visual interpretation of the tree, but most of the information would be kept in research books, notebooks and records. It's not surprising that a lot of the information was rather difficult to comprehend as an outsider looking in, as it was often the interpretation of the researcher alone.
We are a much more communicative society today and we can be as creative as we want, as we impart information to our family members. The family tree can therefore be very graphic and very understandable, presented with confidence and care. Of course, you have to do all the donkey work first of all, to find out all the information...
Your genealogy search is going to be an adventure and nobody knows how complex it is going to be until you actually start. If you're lucky enough to find that your family was mostly contained within the United Kingdom, then your task will probably be a lot easier than if many of your forebears travelled to far-off lands. For example, it was not uncommon for a surname to be completely changed upon arrival in the United States, due to misunderstandings or misspellings at the border post.
To start off with you should look for records of births, marriages and deaths and then extend to census information, reading newspapers, looking at trade directories and parish records. You should definitely look for a good family genealogy application for your personal computer at the very beginning - start off as you mean to go on.
Commit every piece of information that you gather to paper and keep good notes throughout. Remember that you are not just looking for static information, but a lot of colorful material to help back up the family history. The anecdotes that you gather at this point will really make your finished work interesting to your relatives, as they see how their ancestors actually lived.
It goes without saying that if you are spending all this time to create your family tree, you should make sure that it is preserved for posterity. A website is a good way of doing this and you will also create a great base for genealogists in the future to build on the work that you have started, to keep the family records going.
Just to give you a bit of inspiration, did you know that the longest continuous family tree in existence dates back more than 2,500 years? This tree can be traced all the way back from the 20th century to the time of the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius!
