Painting Over Oil-based Paints
An important question asked frequently, and for a good reason.Appling wrong apliacation could cost many hours of teadias work,to achieve a sound painting surface, not to mention material cost. There is no shortcuts ,to be done right apply following information. On job compleation you'll be glad you did and all the steps you went through to achieve a sound job wont seem as bad as they were while doing them. You'll be wearing the smile of success. Here's a few ways to determine if your surface to be repainted truley is an oil-based paint.with 100-150 grit sandpaper lightly sand an area of your surface. If the area sanded creates a dusty surface rather than ropping up onto paper surface and creating scratdhes in surface, you have an oil-base surface to deal with. Also you can apply a small amount of laquar thinner on a rag.Wipe in small area with rubbing motion. If area holds strong rather than start gumming up onto rag ,you have an oil-based surface to repaint. First and easiest way to repaint an oil-based surface is to repaint with an oil based finish.First sand or wash area to be painted.Sanding creates a smooth surface to repaint, also helps to bond new finish.Washing removes any grease or other dirt from surface, and kills gloss to help bond new finish. This should be done with T.S.P or other comparable product.Make sure to rinse surface after washing.Let dry then apply an oil-based finish. Although this might be the easist process ,I don't suggest it due to new oil-based finishes yellow very fast after u apply. The wihter the color the worst it will yellow. To apply a latex finish over oil, sand and wash as stated above. Before appling latex finish prime with a oil-based enamel primer. The primer will bond to the exisisting finish,The new latex will bond to the oil-based primer. After oil primer dries sand lightly tack with cloth and apply 2 coats of new latex top-coat. I prefer this method duie to finish doesnt yellow. Also next time your ready to repaint no hassle ,just wash and apply another coat of latex finish. Good kuck and take your time ,youll be glad you did.
