Pediatric dentists work exclusively with children. The normal age ranges from infants to teenagers. They receive training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of childhood dental issues. Educated in the delivery of routine dental care and complex problems they are often the first dentist a person sees. They watch for signs that the teeth are not coming in right, crowded teeth, diseases and injuries. Their training in child psychology enables them to calm the fears and anxiety many children experience during a dental visit.

Orthodontists focus on placement of the teeth. Using retainers, braces, wires and bands their training enables them to move teeth around gradually. The goal is to guide teeth in straight, correct an over or under bite and close gaps. Their goal is for patients to reach adulthood with structurally sound, well-placed teeth. In the past, they have worked with primarily children. Due to the invention of clear plastic braces, more adults choose to have their teeth corrected. Proper placement makes teeth more functional, improves their appearance and makes them easier to clean.

Periodontists work on the gums, tissue and bone. Gingivitis and periodontitis are serious diseases that left untreated can cause teeth to fall out. The bacteria deteriorates the supporting bone that holds teeth in place. They train in special procedures including a deep cleaning process, placement of implants to support teeth already loosened and treatment to control continuing bone loss. In advanced cases or severe injuries, they may perform bone and tissue grafts to save endangered teeth.

Oral surgeons can perform surgery and treatment of the neck, mouth and face. They commonly remove impacted wisdom teeth and teeth that need cut out versus being pulled. They can remove cancers, repair birth defects and perform reconstructive surgery to correct damage caused by disease or injury. Oral surgeons can correct jaw alignment and place implants to support dentures, crowns or bridges. They can provide patients with mild or complete sedation.

Edodontists train to treat injuries or disease in or under the teeth. It includes the nerves, tissue and blood vessels. The most common procedure they perform is a root canal. It involves removing diseased or damaged material from the canal where the roots of the teeth grow. They fill the canal with a specific substance and seal the area to avoid infection. They save teeth that would otherwise have been lost.

Other specialties include Prosthodontist whose main function is to replace missing or damaged teeth with crowns, bridges or dentures. Sedation dentistry has the ability to sedate patients, especially those fearful of dentists. Cosmetic dentistry works with teeth to improve a person’s appearance. Cosmetic dentistry can also improve the overall function of people’s teeth. For more information visit: http://losgatosfamilydentistry.com/
