The Evolution Of Machining And The Societies It Serves

For many decades now machining has been responsible for many great advances and improvements in the manufacturing industry due to the many ways that it has increased productivity and lowered the risk of personal injury for the workers. Originally, the machines the industry used where gigantic things that could only manage a single function at once, but now that the machines have become more compact and can multitask like never before the manufacturing industry can produce some incredible products faster than anyone would have believed.

The manufacturing process known as machining requires a machinist to use a piece of equipment that is designed to carve a certain amount of mass from an object so that it is altered into a specified geometrical shape. The number of parts machines are used to create each year is nearly unfathomable as these parts are required to construct a seemingly endless amount of commercial goods.

Machines have come a long way from where they originally started and are able to do so much more than most believed they would be able to do, but most machines are variations of three basic types. Drills are possibly the most widely used machines, even among the general population, and they are used by pressing a rapidly turning cutting bit into a material to make a perfect hole through its core. When you have a block of steel and you want to turn it into a pyramid shape you want a milling machine which is used to cut away at the materials surface and give it a whole new shape all together. A turning machine, such as a lathe, will spin the material itself and a cutter is pressed against it to carve and reshape the piece.

When we first started using machines to manufacture different products it was a very time consuming ordeal that was limited in many ways do to a lack of functions on the machines and the fact that the people responsible for running the machines had to exercise caution if they were to keep from getting themselves severely hurt. After a great deal of planning and innovation the machines that are in use today are capable of taking on several important functions at any given time while the human operator is able to stand away from the machine as it operates instead of putting themselves at risk, so the process is overall safer and faster and still putting out quality parts.

Now days, there is next to nothing that you can come across in a store that hasn't been through the machining process since it is used to create everything from aerosol cans to high-dollar cars and trucks. Thanks to this one process we've been able to enjoy countless luxuries and advances in other industries that have improved and even saved countless human lives.
