Stylish Kippas for 2011
Long gone are the days when a Jewish man's only choice for a kippot was black or...black. It's 2011 and there is nothing wrong with being somewhat stylish about what adorns your head. You can showcase your style and personality without forgoing important traditions or requirements.
A kippot, also known as a yarmulka, is a round cap worn by Orthodox Jewish men who are required to keep their heads covered at all times. The head covering is "worn as a sign of respect to remind one always that God's presence is over us and as a sign of respect whenever we say a blessing." Although the skullcap is part of the Jewish tradition, it is not sacred, and therefore, okay to adorn with different patterns, logos, cartoons, and whatever else you can think of.
According to Rabbi Joel Meyers, it's not important what's on the kippot. It only matters that you wear it and know its religious significance.
It's interesting to watch the changing designs over the years. Just like all people follow the trends of the season, so do those designing kippas. Back in the 80's it was easy to find one with a Ghostbusters logo on it. Today it's not hard to find ones with super heroes or the latest cartoon character for children. Patterned kippas are especially good for children who might feel somewhat embarrassed to wear one. However, with their favorite character or sports team on it, they'll feel much more comfortable with it on.
Children aren't the only ones who can enjoy fun patterns and designs. Men concerned about their entire outfit matching can find a kippot to go with anything they put on. If you're going to be wearing this all day, you might as well stock up on a few different materials, colors, patterns, and designs. Interestingly enough, less observant Jewish men who only wear a yarmulka for special occasions or at synagogue tend to go for plain and simple choices. Men who wear it every day are a bit braver and enjoy wearing the more fun designs.
With such stylish designs, it's also the perfect gift idea for the men in your life. You can always find one to fit their personalities. Whether it's for a birthday or a Hanukah present, no one will be disappointed with this gift, especially young children. You can never have too many yarmulkas!
There's nothing wrong with a little color in your life. Consider ditching the plain black kippot and opening yourself up to a world of beautifully designed kippas!
