The Power of Love

by J Sidharta

Once upon a time in China, there was a woman named Sue who married with a man she loved. Sue lived in her mother in law’s house because his husband was the only child and her father in law had passed away. After several months they lived together, there were some incompatibilities between Sue and her mother in law. Their characters are very different; Sue didn’t like a lot of her mother in law’s behaviors, especially critics she received continuously. Day by day was passing by, the relationship between Sue and her mother in law was getting worse. They always debated and fought, furthermore from the view of ancient China custom, a daughter in law was demanded to obey all her mother in law’s wishes and honor her. All the disputes happened in the house made a deep sadness on Sue’s husband, he felt that all he did was wrong and he couldn’t handle the problem. Finally, Sue couldn’t bear anymore; she decided that she got to do something. She went to her father’s best friend named Uncle Lie, an owner of a drug store. Uncle Lie was a wise old man who loved Sue as his own daughter. Sue told him about the problem in her family, and then asked him for a poison formula to solve her problem. Uncle Lie thought, then said, “Sue, I will help you to solve your problem, but you have to promise me that you will obey all what I say to you.” Sue said, “All right Uncle Lie, I will obey anything you say.” Uncle Lie entered the back room, and several minutes later he came out with a pack of drug formula. He said to Sue, “You cannot use a strong poison to kill your mother in law, because it will make everybody suspicious. In that case, I give you a special formula. It will work very slowly; you have to cook your mother in law’s favorite food by your own hands and put this formula a bit into her food everyday. Therefore, if someday she dies, no one will suspect you, you must be in a well manner. Do not debate her, obey anything she says and treat her as a queen.” Sue was satisfied and thank to Uncle Lie. She went home right away and started her plan in poisoning her mother in law. Weeks after weeks and months after months had passed. Everyday Sue served her mother in law; cooked for her and gave the food that she ‘had poisoned’ before. Remembering Uncle Lie’s message, to prevent the people’s suspicious mind, she got to learn how control her anger. She had to obey, serve, and treat her as her own mother. Six months later, the situation in the family had been totally changed. Sue had been able to control herself as possible as she can, so that she never been angry and feed up with her mother in law. She never debated her anymore; she felt that now her mother in law was friendlier and kind, and easier to lived together with her. Her mother in law’s attitude really had changed; she loved Sue as her own daughter. She told her friends and relatives that Sue was the kindest daughter in law in the world. Sue and her mother in law loved each other day by day, treat one to the other as daughter and mother. One day Sue came to Uncle Lie with anxiety, she would like to ask him a favor again. “My dear Uncle, please give me the antidote of the poison that I gave to my mother in law. I don’t want the poison kill her! She has changed and becomes a lovely woman, so that I love her as my own mother!” Uncle Lie smiled, looked at her in wise and said, “Sue, there is nothing you have to worry about. I never gave you any poison. The formula that I gave you was only a strengthening body formula to repair your mother in law’s health. The only poison presented was your own mind and attitude to your mother in law. But it has gone, wiped by the care and love that you gave to her.” The story above realizes us on the amazing power of love. Love and attention brings care, honesty, and sincerity to sacrifice. Love can make us free from misunderstanding, break the unconcerned, and soft the hard heart and the full hated mind. Love, care, and attention will bring peace and glue the differences to delightful harmony. “The one who love others will be loved by others too as the compensation.” Spread your love and attention to the people around, life will be tasted joyful and more meaningful.
