If you have an invention you will need to take out a patent for it, so you have the exclusive rights to that invention for a set period of time. You may also need to copyright trade marks, written works and other materials. The U.S. Patent office is a huge operation that has been in existence for almost as long as the United States itself. There is even a provision in the U.S. Constitution protecting and encouraging the right to copyright and patent new inventions. You just have to use it.
