Is It Possible For Women Executives To Make Work Fun?

by Roxanne Batson

Women in business unite! Let's go out there and have fun breaking the glass ceiling!

Carolos Castaneda said "We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same." This is so true, but so hard for women executives who excel to covert their busy lives at work into truly joyful events on a daily basis. Or is it?

I have worked all of my adult life and half of my teenage life. Never, until recently, did it occur to me that having fun should be part of my work. When I look back at my career, though, the times when I flew the farthest and the highest were those times when I was having fun. Yet, when I look at the business women around me I see stress, frustration and intensity rather than joy. Why aren't they having fun? Maybe because they believe if they have fun, the work will suffer.

Have you ever thought about how having fun could result in better quality work?

According to Dr. Wayne Dyer in his book "The Power of Intention" research has shown that our seratonin level (our bodies "feel good" chemical) is significantly improved when we are kind to someone, the recipient of a kind act or even just the observer. Wouldn't the same apply to our seratonin levels when we're having fun?

Think about this. When you feel good, do you work better?

Feeling good allows us to do more because we FEEL like doing more. When we're in a better mood we're able to be more productive, make decisions more quickly and enjoy ourselves while we're doing it. You'll also find that as a woman executive, you may get more response and better work out of your employees if you put fun into their business day.

Aim this week to put more fun into your work world. Whether it's sharing a laugh with an employee or bringing the fixins for ice cream sundaes for the whole crowd, you may just find the result goes beyond fun, leading to a better quality of life and work.

And what about your results as a woman executive if you actually engage in frivolity and joyfulness? My guess is that your employees, your production and your net results will improve substantially. As you and your employees have more fun at work everyone will experience greater enthusiasm as they approach each assignment. They will also become more creative and excited by their work.

At least it's worth a try don't you think? You just might find that you'll succeed beyond your wildest dreams...and wouldn't that be a great thing?!
