Cosmetic surgery is more common and socially acceptable than ever before. In fact, making the decision to have a cosmetic procedure is now the easiest part of the entire process. The hardest part is insuring you find the right cosmetic surgeon – someone who you feel comfortable communicating with, who also has the talent and experience to give you the permanent results you have envisioned. In the world of cosmetic surgery, there are many decisions to be made and opportunities for things to go wrong. You must be structured in your approach to decision-making if you want to minimize potential for problems down the road. Before you decide who your cosmetic surgeon will be and what specific procedure(s) will be the best for you, you need to have several important questions answered.Questions to Ask When Interviewing Cosmetic Surgeons·Are you certified from the American Board of Plastic Surgery? This is an extremely important question to ask, and if the answer is ‘no’ you should continue your search. ·What procedures do you specialize in? There are numerous areas of cosmetic surgery that a surgeon can specialize in. You want to select a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in the type of surgery you are planning on having.·Do you have hospital privileges? This question is critical because it can tell you if the cosmetic surgeon is respected in the medical community. If the surgeon does not have hospital privileges, than he or she is not the most qualified cosmetic surgeon you can find. ·Can I contact references who have had the same procedure I am interested in? Although checking references is always a good idea, most cosmetic surgeons will only refer you to their satisfied patients who would not have anything negative to say. ·What are your surgery fees and financing options? It’s very important to know how much your surgery will cost and what up-front fees you will need to pay. When you ask this question you should find out if the quoted price includes facility, anesthesiologist and implant fees.·What is your consultation fee? Many cosmetic surgeons do not charge for the initial consultation, but you should find this out in advance. If there is a fee, you should ask if it will be deducted from the cost of surgery.Questions to Ask During Your Initial Consultation·What procedure is the best option for the end result I am seeking? Most cosmetic surgeons will discuss at least one or two different options with you before recommending the best procedure. ·Will the surgery be performed in your office or at a hospital? As stated, you want to make sure your cosmetic surgeon has the option of performing your surgery in a hospital. If the procedure will take place in the surgeon’s office, you need to be certain that the office is accredited for the specific procedure you are scheduling.·Will I be asleep or awake during the procedure? This is an important question to insure your expectations are in line. If the procedure only requires local anesthesia, you will be awake. For both general and sedation anesthesia, you will not be conscious during the procedure.·Who will pay the extra charges if the surgery runs longer than expected? This question is critical because many hospitals charge operating room and anesthesia fees at an hourly rate. ·What do you charge if revision surgery is needed? Depending on the procedure you select, the revision rate could be as high as 15-20. You need to know if you will be responsible for paying revision costs before your initial surgery.·Do you charge for follow-up appointments? Most cosmetic surgeons will include one year of follow-up appointments at no charge. If this isn’t the case, you need to know how many times you will probably need to come back and how much each of those appointments will cost you.Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Final Decision ·Did the surgeon explain the recommended procedure and risks in a way you could thoroughly understand? ·Did he or she discuss what to expect in terms of postoperative care and recovery?·Did the surgeon explain what your realistic expectations should be?·Did he or she listen to all of your concerns and answer your questions in detail?·Do you feel comfortable communicating with the cosmetic surgeon? ·Are you absolutely confident he or she is best cosmetic surgeon for your needs?
