Time Management Tips For Home Business Entrepreneurs
Balancing Home Business And Personal Priorities
One of the biggest advantages of running a home based business is having the freedom to work your own hours and to be as productive as you like. Without a daily, often lengthy commute to work, home business entrepreneurs can spend several more hours at work each day. But will it make their home based business more successful?
Are Longer Hours More Productive
Psychologists have often argued that working longer doesn't make people more productive. Indeed, many say that it has the opposite effect. There are also the concerns over the impact of a long work day culture on work-life balance, health and safety. Nevertheless, many home business owners insist there is a sound case for working into the night and that it is even a necessary part of being a home business entrepreneur.
The Upside
But if the long and unsociable hours are the downside of running a home based business, they are offset by the flexibility working from home brings. The obvious examples are if you work very late one night, you can take the next afternoon off and spend time with the family. Or at least if you choose to work a bit longer you can justify it in the sense that it would have otherwise been unproductive time spent commuting. In fact, there is sometimes a belief among new home business entrepreneurs that you have to put in the hours to succeed and have to be at your desk, sending emails from early morning till late into the night. This is not necessarily the case and while hard work is to be encouraged, so too is the need to manage the work-life balance.
Take Care Of Yourself As Well As Your Home business
One method to avoid tipping the work-life balance too far in favour of work is to ensure you schedule in time for non work related activities such as such as going to the gym, walking the dog, and personal development courses and so on. Make sure you look after yourself, not just your home business. Your business and your clients need you operating at your best.
Find A System That Works For You
Or alternatively, structure your home business so that you can stick to a nine to five working day and make sure you include breaks, just as you would at a regular job. This system works for some because it makes them focus on completing their work before they knock off for the day and it also provides reassurance that they have the ability to switch off from work and have some personal time.
Not Everyone Is The Same
Then again, for others it may be that working at night suits their home environment better. Maybe the kids are asleep and perhaps they are more switched on at night. Again, the key is to be disciplined and provide for some personal time and space.
Your Home Business Will Thank You
Time management when you work from home is not just about being productive at work. While that it should be major focus it is equally important to take care of your personal health, well being and family environment to ensure the work life balance is a healthy one. Ultimately, a healthy and happy you is the best resource you can provide to run a productive and successful home business.
