Seven Reasons Why Baby Boomers Resisit Change for Health and Wellness

by Nancy Stark

Many babyboomers, especially those experiencing a midlife crisis, set their attention on moving away from a problem rather than moving forward toward a solution. Stopping or denying the difficulty or challenge takes precedence over finding a real, positive, and long-lasting resolution.

Unclear Goals

As stated above, most people want to find solutions by moving away from a problem rather than moving toward a solution. It's a relatively simple concept-- If you do not know where you are going, how will you know when you get there? For instance, if you wanted to drive somewhere in your car, would you drive with out directions? Having a fixed, clear, desired outcome is key when seeking change.

Fear of the Unknown

Changes take you out of your comfort zone. Familiarity reinforces the status quo. You need to think outside the box when pursuing your goals.

Inaccurate Perceptions

Perceptions are what you see. When you are considering change, it is difficult to be objective about your challenges. You are what you think!

Impatience

Immediate results may be false and temporary at best. There are no quick fixes to a crisis situation. Solutions to a crisis or desired change are processes. The process may appear daunting, but the results can lead to new growth and a healthy, balanced life.

Lack of Support

Think back to when you were in high school. Do you remember all the socializing with friends? Friends were the most important piece of your life back then. It still holds true today. Open up to family and friends. Everyone needs encouragement and motivation. Find a trusting, lending ear.

Lack of Accountability

Gentle support aids in helping you to be liable for your actions without judgment and with complete confidentiality. This is one of the main reasons coaching is so successful. Accountability is the support you need to keep yourself on track.

Unwilling to Sacrifice

We have come a long way, baby boomers, but many of us are unwilling to give up what we have in order to get what we want. Many of us are unwilling to give up where we are now for where we want to be. However, this implies that we have a choice. Take a chance and regain control.

Change is difficult unless you see the circumstances as a new opportunity. Moving away from a challenge will keep you from finding a healthy solution. Get the support you need and move forward.
