RSA (WA) Online Provides The RSA Certificate

by James Knight

Western Australia's Liquor Control Act requires that all staff involved in the sale or service of alcohol undergo Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training. This training must be the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB009A) unit of competency.

The Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB009A) unit of competency teaches bar staff and employees dealing with the sale or service of alcohol how to: • Responsibly prepare alcohol, • Responsibly serve alcohol, • Assist customers to consume safely, • Assist customers negatively impacted by their consumption and • When it's appropriate to refuse customers service.

While the RSA certification is mandatory, in most cases, for all staff involved in the sale or service of alcohol throughout Australia, it also teaches best practice and the tools of the trade. Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) deliver the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB009A) unit of competency. As the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB009A) unit of competency is a nationally recognised RSA course, your Statement of Attainment will be recognised wholly, or in part, as an RSA certification in other Australian states and territories.

In Western Australia the Statement of Attainment provided by the RTO for the successful completion of the unit is an accepted RSA certification.

In other states and territories there are slightly different RSA requirements. For instance, in Queensland the RTO must be authorised by the State's Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR) before the training organisation can award Queensland RSA certificates.

RTOs can deliver the RSA training online or in person. Whether the training is provided online or in person the same content is covered. Online the RSA training can take up to three hours to finalise, while in person the training can take between three and six hours to complete.

Online training is essentially self-directed, it's entirely up to the individual when, where and how long the training takes place. In person, the RSA training is deliverd in a classroom type setting, with a number of other individuals going through the course at the same time. The different delivery methods will suit different people, depending on their individual needs.

Upon completion of online RSA training you can simply print out your RSA certificate. In person at the end of the training session the RTO will provide you with your RSA certification.

You're able to find out where and for what courses an RTO is accredited via the National Training Information Service (NTIS). Each state and territory liquor authority also provides this information: Which RTOs are accredited to deliver RSA training in that specific region with validity.

As each state and territory does have different requirements, it's a good idea to check via the liquor governing body what exactly is needed for a particular region.
