Where the Night Owls Lurk
Pattaya is quite easy to find your way around, with roads tending to run north to south, parallel with each other. There are a matrix of tiny streets known as 'sois', each one known by a number, with numbers 1 to 16 running north to south and all supposedly one-way [but keep a look out for traffic coming down the wrong way - it is quite usual]. In the evenings, the Thanon Pattaya Nua to the south of Thanon Pattaya Tai is closed to traffic during the evenings, from 18.00 until 02.00am. During these hours this street becomes locally known as Walking Street. This is where the majority of restaurants, bars and nightclubs can be found, together with late night shops and often, the most raucous behaviour!
Between Thanon Pattaya Nua and Thanon Pattaya Klang the sois are numbered 1 to 6. The sois numbered 7 to 13 are located between Thanon Pattaya Klang and Thanon Pattaya Tai. There is a network of sois known as Pattayaland which can be found to the immediate north of Thanon Pattaya Tai are included in the 7 to 13 block. The rest of the sois, numbers 14 - 16, are found to the south of Thanon Pattaya Tai. It has to be remembered that these numbers refer to the names of the streets and most definitely not to the numbers of the dwellings!
The Thanon Hat Pattaya, known variously as Beach Road or First Road, is just 100 metres apart from Pattaya Second Road with Pattaya Second Road running just 100 metres parallel to Pattaya Third Road. Both Thanon Hat Pattaya and Second Road are one way streets, the former being south-bound only and the latter being north-bound. The north-south roads are intersected by a very busy road, the Soi Buakhao and also by the Sukhumvit Road which is the coastal highway. A busy dual carriageway leading to the Sukhumvit Road, known as the Thanon Pattaya Nua, runs from east to west. Other east-west routes are the Thanon Pattaya Klang and the Thanon Pattaya Tai.
Pattaya's other tourist live-spots can be found along Second Road, between sois 1 to 4. Another particularly lively area is immediately north of the Thanon Pattaya Tai, in the sois around there. A particularly lively nightspot is the part of Pattaya Beach that is parallel to the Thapphraya Road at Jontien Beach. Contrary to popular belief, if you avoid those particular areas, you will have a lovely peaceful holiday, suitable for the whole family. If you want to joint the vibrant nightlife, you know where to find it!
