Why You Might Consider Early Retirement
Time for a well-earned rest…
With a great deal of financial pressure on lots of major companies in the UK, the number of people being laid off is on the increase. This is because sales have decreased thanks to the economic downturn, leaving companies with less profit to spend on employee's wages. The simple answer to stop the company going bust is to lay off a bunch of staff.

One thing they may offer as opposed to just being laid off is the opportunity for you to take early retirement. Here are a few reasons why this might be the best option for you:

Early Retirement Package

Many companies, especially when they are keen to get you to leave will offer you an 'early retirement package' that actually be more attractive than your regular retirement package. They may offer you a larger payment up until the time your actual retirement is due or they may offer you other benefits to make sure you go for it. What you need to remember though is that you have a little bit of power in this situation. They want you to do something that you don't necessarily have to do. So what you can do is negotiate to some extent on as you are doing them a favour by stepping aside early. A sweet package may make early retirement worth considering.

Freelance

Another reason why early retirement can be a good option for you is that it allows you to take all the expertise and experience you have developed while working for this company, and use it for your own benefit working as a freelance. This will ensure you still have a good income to supplement your pension and gives you a great deal of freedom in your work that you may not have experienced before.

Even if you feel that your compulsory redundancy is a bit like being thrown out in the cold, it certainly brings up a lot of ideas for self employment that can end up being much more rewarding than your company job ever was.

Stress

For some people, work is always stressful and any chance to escape is worth taking. If you find your job stressful and always begrudge going in to the office every day, early retirement might be something you seriously consider, even if it means accepting less money. Stress can be dangerous too, especially as you get older as it can put strain on your ageing heart that can push it towards getting damaged. Early retirement is always worth considering if your health is an issue.
