How to Make a Family Library

by Autumn Lockwood

Getting together a library for the whole family is a wonderful way to organize everyone's books. It can also be a good way to increase your children's appreciation of reading, since using a library will reinforce how important books are in your household. From just one bookshelf in your living room to a whole room or space that you can devote to the project, building a library in your house is likely to be very worthwhile and enjoyable for everyone. Here are some ideas you can use to help create your own family library.

Getting Together Your Books

Most often, the hardest aspect of assembling your library is bringing together the books from the whole family. It often takes a bit of effort to get everyone's books together, merely because most members of a family store the books in many places all around the house. Gathering all of your books ahead of time is important, since the amount of books you have will determine the amount of shelf space you will need. Request that all of your family members bring their own books to one place in your house, even if they're in the middle of reading them. When all of the books are gathered together, it will be simpler to figure out the very best way to present them.

Organizing Your Collection

There's really no right or wrong way to categorize the books. As an illustration, some families enjoy sorting their books alphabetically, while others favor dividing them by subject or maybe author. If you have devoted an entire room or at least several bookshelves to the library, you could find photos or clip art which represent these different categories, placing them in wood picture frames. After that, mount these on the shelves or on the wall space nearby, so that everyone can quickly see where the numerous categories or books are situated. This is a particularly great idea for kid's libraries, especially for those who are not outstanding readers yet. You may want to designate a separate bookshelf for kid's books, primarily for younger readers. Or even makes use of the lowest sections of the big shelves for the children's books. Either way, it can be fun to decorate the children's section of the library. Acquire photos that are connected to reading or themed art that represents a number of your child's favorite books. And then put each of these into a picture frame and place them up on the walls. Your child is most certain to express more consideration when the library is decorative and appealing.

Using the Family Library

You'll want to be sure that your whole family understands how they should use the library, as soon as you have put all the books in the right place. If you put a lot of thought into categorizing the books, you will probably want to teach everybody about how to keep them the way they are. It may even be a good idea to set up a few simple rules for using the library correctly. For an added touch of fun, create a library sign using the computer, along with any family rules. Display these signs in picture frames on the library walls, so that the whole family can review the guidelines if necessary.

Building a library for the whole family will be not only fun, but also educational and not too complicated.
