Cool European Weekends

by Graeme Smith

In terms of geographical landmass Europe is one of the smallest continents on the planet, and that means that travel is easily affordable and quick, by train, plane, boat or even hot air balloon.

So to get away from your own city and visit someone else's is very easy and most enjoyable. Here are a few that are not to be missed across the continent.

Queensday, Amsterdam

At the end of April all of The Netherlands celebrates Queen's Day, and do so by holding a huge parade in their capital city, with revellers travelling from all over the country to take part. People drink, dance and listen to music as the streets are closed to cars, buses and motorbikes.

While the day is in essence a celebration of being Dutch, DJs will arrive from across the world map to play to the assembled partying masses, with some of their sets lasting just a quarter of an hour as attendees listen to the music for free.

Carnival, Venice

Started in 1268, The Venice Carnival, or as the locals call it "Carnevale de Venezia" is one of the oldest in the world and occurs eleven days before Ash Wednesday and is celebrated by people who dress up in Venetian masks such as the Moreta, Larva and Bauta.

Cannes Film Festival, Cannes

A world renowned film festival that takes place during the last twelve days of May and is one the industry's largest. There is plenty for the tourist to do between parties on yachts and in night clubs and if celebrity spotting is your thing then don't forget to take your camera!

With over 50,000 film directors, agents, producers and actors at in Cannes there is plenty to see and do as they try to promote their seven thousand films.

Northampton Balloon Festival, Northampton

This festival is based in England and happens in the middle of August every year for three days. Balloon enthusiasts travel from around the country - and from abroad - to fly their balloons overhead and entertain the crowds.

Alongside this there is also plenty of live music to keep the crowd amused and also to help create a really friendly atmosphere so that people can enjoy the festival. Visitors also have the opportunity twice a day to go up in a hot air balloon lift and see the surrounding countryside from on high.

As you can see, there's plenty to do on your doorstep and further afield every year.
