Web Site Traffic - What is Web Site Traffic?

by Kerrie Sheehan

What are they talking about? Traffic to me meant the number of vehicles that travels on our roads so it wasn’t long before I realised that in internet terms they were talking about the number of visitors to my web site or blog. So I built a web site but very few people found it. Why? Well what I had was the equivalent of a store selling ice cream in a desert. Great product for a hot desert but very people visit this particular desert. Hence no customers or traffic.

A similar thing happens with your web site in that you may have a great product but no sales. Why? Because no one knows it exists and there is no road for the traffic to get to your store or web site. Hence your web site is virtually lost in cyberspace with millions of other web sites. Any traffic you get is like a lost person stumbling upon your ice cream store in the desert. Now with a shop in a shopping centre not only have you got passing traffic you can attract but you can also have signs to your shop or if all else fails wave a red flag. You can also do this with great graphics but they are not seen until someone actually click on your URL or the web address of your web site. So you have no visible means of attracting traffic to your web site.

This is where search engines and their spiders can come to your cry for help. Spiders – aren’t they creatures that crawl around in the dark, scare you and worse still may bite you. Maybe this is where the term bitten by the “internet bug” comes from. So what are these spiders? Now Google won’t tell you too much as everything is “top secret” and I’m sure they really don’t want us to even know they exist. My understanding of them is that they are in fact a script or code that spreads itself though out the web searching for content to list when someone searches for a particular word or phase called keywords. However these spiders only like to venture in familiar territory so that they need some encouraging to find your web site. They look for the web sites with the most traffic and highest rank and list them first with your web site lost somewhere down with the rest of the “unknown” web sites and in some case not at all.

So a web site needs traffic to get traffic and no traffic means no traffic. Looks like we have to break this vicious circle and feed those spiders.
