Old Greenwich CT: Connecticut's Best Communities

by Steven Penny

Old Greenwich, Connecticut is known for its luxurious seaside living, its rich variety of recreational and cultural activities on a peninsula in the beautiful Long Island Sound. The combination of Old Greenwich's close proximity to major metropolitan centers, together with its elegant water front living makes Old Greenwich one of Connecticut's best communities for your family and home.

Old Greenwich is a distinct district of greater Greenwich in Fairfield County. One of the original settlers was Elizabeth Winthrop - daughter-in-law and niece of John Winthrop, founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. What is now known as 'Greenwich Point' for most of its early history was called 'Elizabeth Neck' after this original inhabitant. The point was purchased in 1640 "For 25 coats" from the Indians. Much of the area that today has come to be known as Old Greenwich was included in this initial purchase by settlers who wanted to escape the strict rule of the Puritans in Massachusetts.

The village of Old Greenwich was called "Sound Beach" in the last century, and the main street through the downtown business section is Sound Beach Avenue. Much of Old Greenwich has fortunately retained its vintage charm. The Old Greenwich Railroad Station, originally known as the "Sound Beach Railroad Station" built in 1894 continues to serve daily commuters in the neighborhood. The town has fiercely resisted the fate of becoming just another "suburb of New York City". Greenwich has several distinct districts each with its own mailing address and ZIP code - such as Cos Cob, Byram, Mianus, Riverside, Glenville, Old Greenwich and greater Greenwich proper.

Sound Beach Avenue running through Old Greenwich serves as a popular shopping area and hang out for children and teenagers - as well as hosting annual street fairs and events. Old Greenwich's main beach is on a long thin peninsula at the southwest end called Tod's Point and is public property belonging to the town.

Binney Park that's 24 acres is located on the western side of Old Greenwich. It has ponds ringed by hemlocks and rhododendrons, four tennis courts and two band shells. The bigger open space is Greenwich Point Park, whose 147 acres touch about an eighth of the Old Greenwich neighborhood.

The combination of Old Greenwich's vintage charm, together with its elegant seaside living on the beautiful Long Island Sound within close commute to Manhattan makes Old Greenwich one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.
