Discovering Your Ideal Hair Dye Color

by Sherry J Brister

If you are looking to change the color of your natural hair, you need to make an educated choice as to which shade to choose. Not every color will work on every skin tone or with every eye color. There are also some colors that will not compliment certain natural hair colors. So, before you dye your hair, take a moment to read this article so you can make the right choice for you.

In general, whenever you plan to color your hair you must not select a color that is more than three shades away from your hair's organic coloring because this will produce poor results. Additionaly, try not to go lighter than the tone of your skin, because this could make you look a little artificial. If you plan to move from light to dark, the process is pretty straight forward. It will typically come out as you expect if you simply follow the directions on the bottle. But if you plan to move from dark to light, there is a slight chance that you could wind up with a shade that is pretty much identical to the color you started out with. Some people may have to strip their hair of the natural color (this is called bleaching) before a dye can be applied. You usually run into this when your natural hair color is a very dark color.

If you have hazel, brownish, or greenish eyes along with a warmer skin tone, you can generally opt for a warmer hair color like auburn, red or gold. For those with gray or blue eyes and light colored skin, try a cool hair shade like light gold or one with an ash hue. That said, some folks are blessed with light colored skin and darker eye colors, or warmer skin tones with blue eyes. If this is your case, you may find that your natural color is the best for you. It could be the one and only option that works perfectly for you.

If your skin has a pink shade, opt for red, golden bonde, or ash tone colors. If your skin tone is on the milky side, chances are that pretty much every color will look good on you. But if you are white, avoid really dark colors as they will make you appear sickly. For those with yellow skin, try a dark brown or deeper red hue, and stay away from gold, orange and yellow shades to avoid your skin and hair colors washing each other out.

At the end of the day, some folks think they can just enter a grocery store, buy an off-the-shelf coloring product, apply it to their hair, and automatically come out looking like a million bucks. That being said, this will not occur as easily for you (unless of course you have your very own hair stylists on staff!). You'll need to do a little bit of work for sure, but the ultimate result will make it totally worthwhile.
