Why You Will Quickly Learn About Your Newborn

by William Jason

The moment that my daughter was born, I had a huge sense of relief because it was quite a long and arduous labor that my wife had gone through, so I was just happy to finally see her alive and kicking. Knowing that she was okay was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I finally could relax. However, as anybody who's ever had a baby before knows, there is no such thing as relaxing after your child is born. I literally had about a half an hour after I left the operating room, to go and call friends and family to tell them that my wife had to be induced and that our child was unexpectedly born a week early. I then went and got myself a cup of coffee and sat down and was finally able to catch my breath and just think about things and relax for a minute.

That was probably the last time that I was able to actually really catch my breath for the next few weeks, as when we brought our daughter home, there was so much to learn and so much to do, that it was quite overwhelming at first. No amount of reading books or watching videos can prepare you for everything that you're going to need to know, and as you will find out, you learn what you need to, when the time comes. You will learn how to hold her, how to decipher her bowel movements between ones that are normal and ones that are not, how to bathe her, how to dress her, and on and on it goes. There will be so many different things that catch you unaware such as how to take care of the umbilical cord until it falls off, but you will always end up finding the answer from either the Internet, friends, family or your doctor or midwife.

I look back at myself when my daughter was first born, and how much easier things were two weeks later, and it was like night and day. By then things seemed almost like I had been doing them forever. This is exactly how most parents feel after the first month, and I can assure you that you will most likely feel the same way as well. You will start to get into your own routine, and have a set schedule with your newborn. Once all this comes about, your parental instincts will really start to take over, and things become much more natural for you and your baby.
