Turning An Eyesore Into A Work Of Art

by Richard Johnson

We've all been walking through towns or cities to be confronted by a vast expanse of scaffolding ahead of us, surrounding and, more importantly supporting, the latest redevelopment or new building complex. We may consider it to be mildly inconvenient as we detour away from our preferred route to get past the obstacle, but that ugly scaffolding, with all its nuts and bolts and projecting tubes can be transformed into a more attractive alternative quite cost effectively by digitally-printed scaffold sheeting.

Scaffold sheeting and safety netting not only creates an advertising opportunity, but it's also crucial in protecting the public from falling items - tools or materials that might be carelessly dropped from some height - but it also provides an environment that enables the builders to carry on working through adverse weather conditions.

From the contractor's point of view, scaffold sheeting creates the perfect opportunity for them to publicise their own services, usually by the printing of a large logo and strapline on alternate lengths of sheeting. But there's another opportunity too, for the developer or the end user of the building. The public are often ill-informed about the purpose of the project. The architect's board gives little information, apart from the need for anybody on the site to wear protective headgear and high-visibility clothing. What about all that space that now envelops the building? Surely it's the perfect opportunity to explain to passers by what the new building is and how they might benefit from it, once it's completed.

Because of their size, buildings surrounded by scaffold sheeting can create an immediate impact with people passing through on foot. But often, in cramped city centre locations, the building work can project beyond the pavement and into the adjacent road. This then is a double opportunity to appeal to motorists as well as pedestrians with your messages. And, because of recent advances in digital printing techniques, those images can be as complex as you need them to be. Complicated multi-colour graphics and realistic photographs for instance can all be carried out with a high degree of authenticity.

Digitally printed scaffold sheeting is set to make an enormous impact on building developments in the future. With outdoor advertising becoming more expensive as a media form, the building site is arising as an opportunistic way for building contractors, developers and the final end users of buildings to make their own statements in the most dramatic way.
