SEO Article Writing: How Long Should My List Of Keywords Be?

by Steve Shaw

When doing SEO article writing, do you ever wonder just how long your list of keywords should be? Should you target your articles around a rotating list of 10, 15, 25, 30 or more keyword phrases?

That's a great question that I get sometimes, and I'm happy to give you some direction on this.

First let's clarify what types of keywords to use in your articles and titles and what types should be used in your resource boxes.

Main Keywords:

When doing keyword research, create a list of 5-10 very popular, very competitive keyword phrases for which you would like for your website to rank highly. These are the phrases that have a big payday--there are tons of people searching for these terms.

If you can rank highly for one of these terms, then the search engine traffic that your website receives will be staggering.

The downside to these super popular terms is that there is usually a lot of competition. Consequently, getting a high ranking for these types of keywords is a long term endeavour (but worth it!).

These popular search terms are the ones that you will target in your resource boxes, using them as anchor text for the link going to your website. You will alternate using the items in this list of 5-10 main phrases in your resource boxes.

Rotation is key! The resource box that uses words as anchor text is extremely powerful. Do not use the same phrase each time in your resource box, as that can send up a red flag with Google and compromise your marketing campaign.

Long Tail Keywords:

These are usually longer than the main keywords, not as popular, and not as competitive. This lack of competition means that it's likely that your article can rank highly for this term with relatively little effort.

Develop a list of about 20 to 30 or more of these longer terms. These long tail terms will form the basis of your SEO article topics and titles.

What To Do:

Option A--You have an idea for an article, and then you look at your long tail keyword list to see which of your terms would fit nicely in a title for an article on your topic.

Option B--Look at your list of long tail keywords, pick one term, then think of an article topic that could utilize that term.

When writing a SEO article, use the term in your title. Also use the term in your opening paragraph, if possible. Any time you write SEO articles, you must always use the keywords in a natural sounding way.

It's fine to include semantically related variations of your keyword terms in the article, such as: race cars, racing cars, how to race a car, etc. Google recognizes phrases that are variations, so there is no need to repeat the same phrase throughout the article. Your SEO article writing should sound natural!

Summary:

SEO article writing involves two different types of keyword terms.

The goal with the main key phrases is to get your *website* to rank highly for those terms. The goal with these long tail keyword phrases is to get your *article* to rank highly for those terms.

Two different goals for two different types of terms.

With the main key phrases, it is essential that you rotate the terms you use in your resource box.

With the long tail terms, rotation is not crucial. It is fine to write a few SEO articles in a row using the same long tail term. You may find it much easier to write about some of your long tail terms than others, and you may end up writing more articles for some than others.
