7 Tips On How You Can Become an Expert at Anything

by Zulhairy Abdullah

People are discussing about a certain matter and your name will frequently crop up when they come to a dead end. You are an expert when people start asking you questions about something which cannot be answered by anyone else and your answer is taken as correct. When you start explaining, other people start listening. You talk with an air of confidence that others will only nod in agreement, and they may even ask: can you detail that a bit?Being an expert also comes with heavy responsibility. You’re expected to give the solution and a correct one, that is.At times you’re also alone because no one else can help you. You’re on your own charting a new unexplored path.I've had the opportunity to be labeled as an expert in a few fields. Well, other people call me so, maybe its a complement to get me to help or be nice to them. Or it could be true. Here I want to share what are the things that you can practice if you want to become an expert in any field that you may choose. The 7 Tips1. Read all the information that you can find on the subject. Make notes and do anything that helps you remember the information. Go through the information in multiple pass. You can practice mind-mapping, the mnemonic system or constantly revising your notes. There are good books that explain about these.Personally I use the method popularized by Tony Buzan and Paul R. Scheele, to name a few.2. Check and argue intelligently with other people who are more knowledgeable to make sure your understanding on something is correct; of course this is only possible when you are not the expert yet. When you attend seminar or presentation or a meeting, ask question to the person that is giving the talk or who sounded knowledgeable. It doesn’t matter whether personally or going for the microphone, don’t forget to get their phone no. or e-mail. You may need to contact them later.3. Be involved in any aspect of the subject when you get the opportunity, never reject any of the opportunities.Sometimes you have to stay back a bit longer when others are already on the street having fun. But this is a trait of an expert. If you’re already on the street with your friends how are you going to be more knowledgeable than them? What you know will be at par with them.4. Write down what you understand on the matter when it is still fresh in your mind. It is better if you have a book or a system that will make sure what you've written will not go missing.Writing on a lose piece of paper which will get mixed up with other lose paper is a bad idea in this case. And the more that you write, the better it is. Try to question yourself and write down the answer in detail. Our mind will easily forget what is meant by a very simple sentence or statement that nobody else can understand.4. To make your knowledge stick to your mind, also never miss the opportunity to help answering other people's question regarding the subject.I believe answering question helps my mind to put things in order and also increase my memory retention. The question makes my mind work faster and sometimes I got new insights when my answer is challenged by someone.5. You have to go through most processes many times until you remember it. Some said its at the tip of their tongue or ohhh…I can do it blind folded. For example if 10 people ask the same question, the ten times that you talk about the matter will make you remember more rather than when only one person asking that question and you answered only once.Another example is that, how do you become expert at driving. Of course by driving and that is many, many times. And you can tell anyone how to drive, don’t you, even if you’re blind folded.6. Come out with documentation and submit them for others to comment and use, but usually when you are the expert, they won't know what to comment. They just keep quiet or comment on the cosmetic structure. You mind will have to work hard to come out with a good document. You must proof read it. Also paraphrasing or changing the words, sentences and paragraph many times to make the meaning clearer to your readers. In the process making your understanding more structured.7. Be persistent because it will take time. From my experience it will take at least 3 to 4 years to attain the knowledge that qualifies you as an expert subject matter. That is considering you're on the subject daily.I think there are a few others that I did not put down here. Hopefully I’ve covered the basic. And my final advice is, even though you think you have achieved the status of an expert at something, some knowledge become obsolete quickly. So enhance your knowledge now and then. For example if you're an expert in rearing ornamental fish or cows, most probably the knowledge will last for years or maybe decades and you can pass the knowledge down even to your grandchildren. But if you're an expert only in Intel processor 8088, get busy updating your knowledge. “Have you heard about the Pentium?” your children asked.
