What Is African Mango and Does It Help You Lose Weight?

by Sherri Turner

The African mango, a fruit that is indigenous to coastal West Africa, is considered to be a "super fruit" that can help with healthy weight loss. The seeds are edible and protein-rich, and extracts are available in pill form as supplements. However, do African mangoes help with weight loss?

The Hype

The supplement for weight loss became popular quickly after being endorsed on the Dr. Oz Show. After just a month, it was claimed that the supplement helped to shed 7 pounds while not making any changes to the usual exercise and healthy eating routine. The supplement was even recommended to patients for weight loss.

What Customers Have Said About the Supplement

There are plenty of reviews raving about how the supplement has helped with losing weight fast. Many people have claimed to lose a lot of weight in just a few short weeks. However, others have reported less than impressive results with just a few pounds of weight loss. It has also been noted that after the initial loss of weight, the supplement failed to produce more positive results with continued use.

How Does African Mango Promote Healthy Weight Loss?

Like other foods that help lose weight, the African mango is known to be high in fiber. Foods that contain high fiber are already known to help maintain a healthy diet and reduce cholesterol. However, other foods that have the same effect, including apples, figs, pears, and more. Therefore, the benefits of the "super fruit" that include weight loss and lowering cholesterol is not new.

Research and Side Effects

There have been two studies done in Cameroon on the supplement that have produced positive results. However, it was later noted that the researchers that conducted the studies had a vested interest in the production of the supplement.

There have been warnings against using African mango supplements because of the general lack of knowledge about the fruit. Such limited knowledge can be dangerous, and more studies need to be done to prove that the supplement is as effective as it claims.

The reported side effects for the supplement include:

Headaches Dizziness Flatulence Insomnia (typically within the first few days)

Because of the lack of information, the supplement is not recommended for women who are or may become pregnant or those that are breast-feeding.

Sticking with the Basics for Healthy Weight Loss

Whenever you are losing weight, it is always recommended to focus more on eating healthy and exercising regularly. The best way to eat healthy is to consume smaller portions during meals and to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. It is also best to stay away from processed foods, which are especially high in saturated fats. By making sure you exercise regularly, you will also be helping to shed pounds.

Just remember that achieving true healthy weight loss is a gradual process that will help you maintain your ideal weight over your lifetime.
