This is part five and final article of an ongoing series of eco friendly blinds that are great for energy efficiency and good for the environment. We will be discussing the wood blinds.
Many, many changes have been made in the last twenty years in the real wood blinds market. First, they are massed produced with renewable North American hardwoods. All take a stain and paint much better than the original oaks and maples used in the past and lastly the components used to operate the blinds are made of aluminum.
For wood blinds, most are made with true North American hardwoods while some are made with the less expensive Ramin wood located in the eastern companies. Hunter Douglas and all our suppliers use only the North American basswood because it is harvested and re-grown. Plus the US government on tree re-production, which cannot be guaranteed with the Chinese ramin woods, monitors the industry. This allows them to be massed produced with no effect to the environment.
The wood blinds also take stain and moisture much better than true oaks and maples that are slow growing and slow at renewably. All paints and stains used in the production of the slats are lead free and safe for the environment.
The R-value (energy efficiency) is quite high with wood blinds at about a 3.88 when closed. This blocks around 75% of the heat and cold produced in a typical single pane window and blocks 99% of the harmful UV rays.
All the components on wood blinds are made of recycled aluminum. This is not only good for the environment but protects the wood blind from rusting allowing longer usage (around 10-15 years in most cases).
