Ummm... Awkward! When Drama Hits Joint Ventures
What do you get when two close colleagues embark on joint ventures with the same person... then the two close colleagues split up and run their separate ways?
Go no further than the tabloids and YouTube... with J-Lo and Marc Anthony starting as the "close colleagues" and rapper Pitbull cast as "the joint venture guy".
So here's the scoop... Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony (recently separated and already with new hookups,) each recorded new songs featuring Pitbull's Cubano cool style rapping alongside them. J-Lo revitalized her career thanks to her American Idol stint and her song On the Floor. Marc Anthony, perenially in the "what's that guy doing with his career" mode, teamed up with Pitbull for the song Rain Over Me.
Obviously this all went down before the scandalous split... now we're left with both J-Lo and Marc with hit songs... featuring Pitbull. Just makes for interesting conversation, doesn't it?
Now, rest assured the Viva Blog is not changing focus to deliver celebrity dish. This is simply an observation of the ummm.... awkward moments that can happen when your partnerships turn south.
How are J-Lo and Marc handling their public split? Well, keep an eye on your tabloids for that. And Pitbull? Doesn't really seem to bother him... he's on so many hit songs right now he's swaggering all the way to the bank.
Let's tie this into your business…
The internet marketing streets are littered with Joint Ventures gone sour... from co-created products, to coaching programs, to live events... the list goes on. Here are some quick and easy tips to ride out the breakup and keep your visibility and your brand on top.
1. Keep Your Feelings to Yourself
You may have been highly visible partnering with someone (just like J-Lo and M.A.) and then it all ends. No matter how bitter you're feeling, don't use the public sphere to air your frustrations. It only makes you look bad and can actually get people to sympathize more with your "ex" than with you. A famously fueling feud between two well known speakers is case in point of how extremely out of control things can get.
2. Don't Pick Sides
Pitbull clearly has no problem with the J-Lo/Marc Anthony split... and if you find yourself in the middle of someone else's drama, just play it cool and wish them all well.
3. Plan the Divorce Ahead of Time
If you are getting into co-creating products or programs, make sure you have it mapped out in writing what to do with the material later on... especially if you decide to go your separate ways. I've seen things get really ugly when two people both want to claim ownership over intellectual property... and it never turns out pretty. Talk to someone who specializes in JV marketing or do a search for a basic agreement you both can sign off on. Never jump into the JV sack without protection.
And now for your listening pleasure, here are J-Lo and Pitbull backin' it up like a Tonka truck followed by Marc Anthony and Pitbull singin' over tequila and scorpions... and be sure to leave your comments below!
