Crime Prevention

An example from a Cognitive Workbook

by Larry Lloyd

The subsequent illustration and questions are a good example of the text and curriculum that is located in a Crime Prevention Cognitive Lifeskills Workbook.

Jason came into this world in 1958. His grandpa, Ralph Johnson, had a powerful negative effect on his children and grandchildren except for Jason, his first cousin Becky and some of his other cousins. The rest of the Johnson family was busy with narcotic abuse, anger, theft, hostility, prostitution, welfare, ruined relationships, and a plethora other crimes and bad habits. His mother, a drug addict and a prostitute, went away for long periods of time, leaving the children to fend for themselves.

Jason was caught stealing a car. He was immediately put in juvenile detention and while there he took a cognitive life skills course like this one. Because he wanted to change, the course had a immense effect on him. He was sick of street dwelling, misery and wondering how to get his next meal.

After Jason was released from juvenile detention, he soon reported to his probation officer. She asked him what he had gained a knowledge of from the life skills class. This is what he said:

I was headed in a similar route as my familydrugs, prison, anger, and ruin. Subconsciously I had been programmed with the falsehoods that I was useless and I lived on the bottom. I figured out that I'm a great deal better than I thought . In addition I learned that coming from an abusive home wasnt my fault.

I learned that although I did not have power over my early development, I do have control over the present. I am a brand new person every day and I have the power to block the harm done to me. I will make the choice to forgive and forget so that I can go on with my life peacefully. My past doesn't control my future.

I learned that I cant carry on blaming my parents or other people for all my issues. Life is not always fair and I have to create the best out of each situation. The only I have to move my life forward is to let go of the past.

The Lifeskills class caused me to realize that I'm a deserving individual with amazing potential, that this life is amazing gift packed with many fresh and exciting prospects, and that I have the ability to conquer the drug problem if I choose to.

I learned that being thrashed, hurled into walls, burned with cigarettes, going hungry, feeling shame and living inconstant fear can help me become an improved, more caring person. I learned that hardship and conflict will make me stronger, if I desire to learn something from it.

And lastly, I realized that I'm the captain of my own ship. I can point it whereever I would like. If I refuse to modify my direction I will keep suffering the damaging consequences of my actions and life will continue to get harder and harder until the day that I either change my course or die.
