Are You Collecting The US Presidential Dollars?

by E Clark Mixon

Do you have a Presidential dollar coin collection?

These much sought after coins are part of a series of dollar coins authorized by President George W. Bush in 2005 honoring the United States Presidents. Each year beginning in 2007 four coins are produced by the United States Mint, one for each President in the order of their service, the first coin in 2007 honored our 1st President, George Washington. Coins will only be issued for Presidents who have been deceased at least five years.

The Presidential Dollars were initially submitted into general circulation and the US Mint was to promote these coins to raise the public awareness of the artistic and aesthetic beauty of United States coinage. Later the coins were taken out of general circulation to increase their value to collectors.

The obverse (front face) of the Presidential Dollar depicts the image and name of the President being honored. Also inscriped is the term (the dates the President served in office) and order of service (ie 1st, 2nd, etc.).

Appearing on the reverse is the Statue of Liberty with a large image, the denomination ($1) and "United States of America".

The Presidential Dollars minted in 2007 and 2008 have edge-incused inscriptions of the date, mint mark, and motto "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust". This design was to allow more room for the design of the President's face but was not accepted well by the public. Beginning in 2009 the words "In God We Trust" was moved to the obverse side of the coins.

In the first years of the issuance of Presidential Dollars you could get the coins at your local bank, however as the demand decreased for these coins in general circulation, the United States Mint ceased furnishing them to financial institutions. The best and most cost effective way for the individual coin collector to obtain the past and current issues of the Presidential Dollars is from your coin store, online or offline.

The latest issue of the 2013 Theodore Roosevelt coin is available at Only Mint Coins as well as Presidential Dollars from 2007 - present. The final Presidential Dollar coin issued, at the time of this article in 2013, is Woodrow Wilson.

Many collectors hand down their coin collections to their family. Coin collecting is a great hobby for all the family to share together. If, as a child, one develops an appreciation of the artistic design of each coin released, he/she will most likely enjoy the hobby through their adult life and thus influence any children within the family unit.

Collecting the US Presidential Dollars also brings awareness of the individual President. Much reasearch can be done learning the background, political ideas, accomplishments and challenges for each President while in office, making this "hobby" an enjoyable history lesson as well.

Share this great family hobby and enjoy many hours with your family as you see the wealth grow.
