A quick tour of the campsites in Dorset

by David Rambloor

Welcome to Hardy Country, home of some of the most impressive beaches in the United Kingdom. Campsites in Dorset have an awful lot to offer the adventurous and the family oriented alike.

From Lyme Regis on the left, to Bournemouth on the right (as you look at a map of the British Isles), Dorset’s opportunities for touring holidays are mostly spread out along the coast. Start at Littlesea, which is close enough to little Lyme Regis, to make a visit there is must. You’ll find seclusion and fun in the park itself – and don’t forget to wander out along the county’s Jurassic coastline to see if you can find some of the fossils that literally litter the beaches!

Campsites in Dorset let you take your touring holidays in style – as the amazing Rockley Park, just down the road from Poole, illustrates. A good touring holiday park is as much about its own facilities as it is about its location, and Rockley Park has both: unrivalled views of Poole Harbour and incredible onsite landscaping combine to make you wonder if you really want to leave the park and go exploring at all!

Seaview, the last of our recommendations for campsites in Dorset, is located halfway between the other two, close enough both to Thomas Hardy’s favourite Dorchester and the beautiful sandy beaches at Weymouth to make an ideal touring holidays location. Spend half your time by the sea and the other half exploring the historic streets of the town that Hardy used as the basis for some of his most famous novels.

Dorset is proud of its literary heritage, with John Fowles’ French Lieutenant’s Woman and Hardy’s Tess afforded the status of local heroes. Take a little time out for a literary safari.
