Drama Schools Not Just For The Middle Class
According to an acting school based in Nottingham, children from different backgrounds should gain easier access to drama schools. There are many ‘rough diamonds’ out there: kids from the streets can make fantastic actors.
Thus, drama teachers in the UK should consider helping children that do not have the necessary means to fulfil their dream of acting. The Television Workshop in Nottingham plays an important role in this, and has already helped many youngsters with acting potential.
Drama Teachers In The UK To Help Discover Raw Talent
Starting life as the Central Junior Television Workshop back in 1983, The Television Workshop has been working for 30 years now. Funding for the workshop was cut in 2006, which meant that the workshop had to apply a fee of £300 a year. However, even at that time children who had poor parents were able to attend without paying, which made up around a fourth of the workshop members.
Drama teachers from the workshop have recognised that the demand for new, raw talent is high, which is evident through weekly meetings with actor-hunting agencies. Thus, it seems that even though acting used to be closely associated with middle class, children from the streets seem to be taking centre stage.
Dominic Dromgoole, the artistic director of the Globe Theatre, has said that the lack of children moving into acting from the working classes is worrying. He added that the theatre tradition began with the working classes, and they have acted in roles that reflect the harsh realities of life in all kinds of contexts, from Shakespeare’s plays through to kitchen sink dramas such as Coronation Street.
Drama teachers in the UK can work to make the drama medium as democratic as possible, because without actors who have the real life experience, the medium itself becomes limiting. To make up for the inequality at drama schools, Dromgoole decided to form a theatre group for teenagers aged between 12 to 16 from different social backgrounds. They will get regular theatrical training from experts without any additional fees, making drama more accessible for all children, regardless of their background.
