Rain or Shine
What's that expression again? April showers spring May flowers? Each of the four seasons is beautiful in its own way, but there is something extra special about the sun starting to poke through again after a long, hard winter. The first day of warm weather and suddenly everyone's thrown their jumpers in storage and is lunching outside in shorts and a t-shirt. But we often get a bit ahead of ourselves as spring is usually full of surprises. The sun might be beaming down on us one day and then hidden behind several dark clouds the next. This can be problematic when making decisions about what to wear, which accessories to carry and where to make Sunday brunch reservations. Unlike winter when we know what we're going to get, spring requires us to be doubly prepared for every situation.
Some spring must-haves are:
1. A handbag-sized umbrella:
People who live in rainy cities like London should carry one of these at all times anyway, but never more than in the spring. Even if the sun is shining bright when you leave your house in the morning, you never can be certain what will come of the weather. Having an umbrella in your bag at all times ensures that you'll always be protected. And even if the sun does shine all day, you might want a brolly to shade you from its powerful rays.
2. A sleeping blindfold:
Winter means that the sun comes up late and goes down early. Days become shorter and for many people, more depressing. During the spring and summer the sun comes up early and stays out late. This is ideal for evenings spent on patios and early morning power walks. Unfortunately, the early sunrise can also mean uncomfortable lie-ins. If you don't have effective blinds in your bedrooms, you might consider getting a blindfold to sleep with.
3. Shaded outdoor space:
If you're privileged enough to have outdoor space attached to your home, spring and summer are the perfect time to take advantage of it. They optimise the seasons by making barbeques, mid-day tanning and cocktail parties in the garden all accessible. But too much sun is never a good thing, especially if you're dining or entertaining guests. A canopy shade of some sort is all that's needed to keep you comfortable while enjoying the outdoors. And even if the sky does decide to sprinkle briefly, you won't necessarily have to run indoors for cover.
There is a lot to look forward to in this delightful turn of season, just make sure you're prepared for the unexpected.
