If you are experiencing back pain, the first thing that you should do is to get an accurate diagnosis. By properly analyzing the root cause of your back pain, it may be easier to find the right treatment for your problem.

It is always best to seek help from your doctor. Your physician can recommend you from among available treatment options the one that best suits your case. Don’t hesitate to ask about the highs and lows that come with every treatment and always discuss together with your doctor the one that works for you best. If you feel that a second opinion would help, then do so. There may be times when it is smart to get another opinion especially if you are not so much convinced about the first one. Here are some treatment options that you can choose that can lessen or get rid of your back pain.

Physical therapy. The guidance of a licensed physical therapist is required to get this treatment done right. Your therapist can provide for your recovery and rehabilitation as well as tips on caring for your back. Your therapist can give you the following treatment regimens such as massage, cold and heat compress, electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound and traction.

Medication. Generally, medication is done to give temporary back pain relief. Over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers and non-inflammatory, non-steroidal drugs can make the pain bearable but it cannot eliminate your back pain’s source. However, prolonged use may result to side effects such as stomach pains and ulcers. Make sure to consult your physician for the medication that best suits your back pain. Your doctor may also prescribe some other medications such as cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medicines, muscle relaxants, nerve blocks and codeine, which is a muscle relaxants, depending on the severity of the pain.

Epidural Injection. This anti-inflammatory treatment has been found to be effective in the treatment of lower back pains. An epidural injection, which consists of a mixture of steroids and anesthetics, is performed around the spine’s small joints, spinal canal and the nerve roots. This is usually the last resort when the need to postpone surgical procedures is required.
