Personal development is unending cycle. Effective development relies on the kind of framework you establish for yourself including the strategies and goals to attain them. The personal development process is a dynamic, repeatable and unending process intended for people in order to attain excellence. Below are the steps that you need during the entire process.
Determine Direction
Think that developing yourself is a journey which is the same as arranging a vacation. You can choose your destination, organize transportation and attain desired result. The same process is done in development by knowing where you want to go, ways on how to reach your destination and guarantee that the desired outcome will be achieved. Therefore, a framework is very essential.
The next question is how you will determine your direction. There are a lot of resources available such as publications and seminars that can help in determining your personal direction. Although you may have an idea on where you want to go, it is important to put this idea into written statement. Putting your goals into writing is the first stage towards directed and clear actions.
Assess Strengths
After knowing the direction, the next step is to identify your competencies and critical skills required to realize your personal goals. Competencies are compared against a person's abilities and organizational skills as well as identifying the areas needed for development. There are different tools that can be used to assess your strengths.
Recognizing Learning Pathways
Without new learning and experiences, acquiring new behaviors is not possible. Even with new insights and renewed strengths, having the same kind of behavior will produce same results. In other words, if you are doing same thing over and over again, chances are you will also yield similar results. The learning pathway is designed so that you will be able to reach your destination in a different way.
Take Action
Studying the guitar chords alone will not make you a good guitarist and so with behaviors and skills generated in the Learning Pathway. Having a simple knowledge on new behavior does not necessary makes you expert on that area. After the new learning is recognized, it is important to use that skill and practice to make it part of your behavior collection which can lead to improved results.
Evaluate Results
It is also important to evaluate your personal development progress and modify them in measurable and observable manner. The evaluation of results must be done at specific and predetermined times. There are methods used in evaluation and these include communication, performance appraisals and checking your actions. Communication can offer insights. Conversation with other people can identify the challenges and successes of new methods or behaviors. Performance appraisals can mention instances of both limiting and successful behaviors while checking your actions will ensure the availability of the appropriate work assignment to integrate in your behavior.
Re-Set Directions
This is the final step of personal development but this is not the end. Nurturing your behaviors is very critical in maintaining growth and sustaining success. Meaning, maintaining success is done by identifying additional competencies and repeating the process for continuous improvement. Remember that development is unending and dynamic process.
