Montreal Formula 1- The City's Offerings, The Circuit - A Recipe For F1 Success

by Rebecca Sophia Meade

The Montreal Formula 1 is an event that millions of people look forward to annually, in one way or another. The city is packed full with tourists and excited natives who want to experience the thrill of one of the most popular races in the world. What can be a better place than Montreal, a city in North America with such diverse cultures, and of course, with the French culture being at the helm. It is reminiscent of France in so many ways, with its incredible architecture, fine restaurants, and a great nightlife. Filled with beautiful sites and historical buildings, it is a destination with so much to offer any tourist, regardless of interest or age.

Staying downtown provides easy access to all the Montreal Grand Prix events, from the races to the celebrations that are always associated with them, in addition to everything the city offers, like great shopping, beautiful museums, the underground city, etc. Take a walk to Crescent Street where the road is opened only to pedestrians during the weekend event and check out the race cars parked on display for everyone to enjoy.

No matter where you are coming from, forget about taking a car to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve because there is no parking in the area. It can be easily reached by subway, commonly referred to as the metro among natives. From any downtown metro station, expect the ride to be anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes long, or by taxi. However, be prepared for lots of walking to get to your seat. Also, traffic is hectic throughout the Montreal Grand Prix weekend, pretty much everywhere in town, but the city has a reliable public transport system that makes it easy to get around.

The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve was named in honour of the late native Montreal race car driver Gilles Villeneuve. Until 1982, it was known as the Ile Notre-Dame Circuit as it is actually located on this man-made island, of the same name, or in English - Notre-Dame Island (Our Lady´s Island). The island is in the St. Lawrence River, at Parc Jean Drapeau.

Its length is exactly 4.361 km or 2.71 mi, and boasts 13 turns and was revamped to host the Nascar races. It is a challenging track with barriers that are tricky, even for the experienced drivers. In fact, one wall has been coined "The Wall of Champions" because it took out three of the top drivers in 1999.

Aside from the Montreal Formula 1 races being held on the track, the Circuit is actually available for visitors for driving, running, walking, rollerblading, and cycling, between races.

The combination of what Montreal city has to offer as well as the challenges of Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, makes it a recipe for F1 success.
